Your perfect base for the Tongariro Crossing, Kōwhai Hideaway is in a convenient location near the Tongariro River. Double glazed and with upgraded insulation, Kōwhai Hideaway has a well equipped kitchenette, brand new air conditioning, comfortable beds and a pleasant garden outlook. Tranquility is supreme. There’s plenty of off street parking in this quiet street. Kōwhai Hideaway is a ground floor apartment underneath Piwakawaka Lodge. They can be rented together for large groups. The space The 2 bedrooms are generously sized, one with queen bed and the other containing 2 king singles, all with electric blankets for a great sleep after your day’s adventures. A portacot is available for use. The combined living and kitchenette space is compact and outfitted with a small fridge, microwave and benchtop oven plus small appliances allow you to prepare simple meals. Tea and coffee are provided. There is no full size stove. If the weather permits, cook outside on the stone barbeque and eat alfresco, surrounded by native trees and in serenity. Heating / cooling is provided by the airconditioner which can be supplemented by panel heaters if required. Kōwhai Lodge is well away from the state highway and experiences no road noise. This is an ideal location for the serious (or not so serious) angler with the Hydro Pool at the end of the street, only 150m away, and a fish cleaning bench available should you catch a trout you just have to keep! If fishing is not your thing, Kōwhai Hideaway is the perfect base for mountain adventures, white water rafting, water sports and biking. The fabulous Tongariro bike trail runs past the back boundary - so easy! Guest access You’re welcome to use the washing machine (front loader) and dryer. Reasonable use rules apply. Wet fishing or snow gear can be hung up to drip dry in the garage. The garden including BBQ area is available for use but shared with Piwakawaka Lodge. Guests at Kōwhai Hideaway have no access to the upper storey (Pīwakawaka Lodge) through either the internal or external stairs. Please respect other guests. Other things to note Parking There is room to park 4 vehicles on the property but be aware that parking is shared with Pīwakawaka Lodge. Please be considerate of other guests and do not park in the turning bay at the end of the driveway. Travelling with Infants and Toddlers We can supply a portacot for travellers with infants. For those with children, please be aware that like most properties in this part of Tūrangi, the river is easily accessible and is a drowning hazard. Provisions We provide tea and coffee but are unable to provide milk. Please bring your own if you require it.
