Though you'll probably get the best sleep of your life here, this is more than a comfortable bed for the night. An immersive writing retreat like no other, this project is about mystery and discovery -- and jumping in the lake. In order to understand this unique offering, please read everything below. Entirely on purpose, the 3 photos above are the only photos here of the property. The most remarkable and rewarding experiences in life are those that are unexpected, uncommon, and ever-fresh. Walk into a film you don't know anything about and, when it's good, it is a revelation, more powerful than if you'd known the plot ahead of time. This type of thing happened to me once on a guided trip. With no time to look at the itinerary beforehand, I just showed up and it all revealed itself step by step like a remarkable dream. This is what I want to give guests, not only because it's so unique in our internet-mapped-out world but because truly fresh discovery fits the writing process to a T. Writers need open space and time, both physical and mental, in order to leave themselves alone to discover, let the writing take over, and travel to unexpected places. The location is off-the grid in the wilderness yet fully equipped for all daily needs. Being off-the grid aids retreat, of course, unplugged here and now. It is not something you can dip into for an hour or a day. You will have a solid roof over your head, an uncommon open view through the many windows, and a pristine freshwater lake to jump into. If you like mature forests, paper birch trees, American white cedar, red squirrels, & bald eagles, this is the place for you -- and all the writing projects you've been putting off. The only practical and efficient way to handle meals here is to have them all on the property (rather than at restaurants) -- and, of course, retreat means steering clear of cars, roads, shopping, advertisements... Breakfast will be provided each day and for the rest of the days' meals, depending on guests' needs and diets, guests can either bring enough of their own food with them at the beginning of their stay for the length of their retreat -- or all food and meals can be provided for a daily fee per person. Having been a writer-in-residence at well-known foundations from Wyoming to New York, I aim to provide the time and space for writers to write, learn, discover but also to guide and encourage as needed. Having experienced these different writing residencies, I have carefully combined the best features of each. In addition, having spent nearly every summer since I was a child on this property, I know it better than the back of my hand and have been making firewood, clearing trails, and taking care of every roof, boat, paddle, and oar for over twenty years. An Airbnb guest since August 2010 and an Airbnb host since April 2011, I am now a SuperHost with over 150 5-star reviews on the site. Trust me to take you on an unexpected journey, inside and out. When not writing or meeting (or eating), there are a variety of outdoor activities to engage in which you can do when you like, if you like. These can be done at your own pace, as strenuous or light as you want. You will need a car if you need or want to go to town on your own. Probably not needed otherwise. Fresh towels, sheets, and blankets are all provided in your private space (though, you are welcome to share with another writer if you want as most spaces have 2 beds). If you are someone who tends to get cold at night, a warm sleeping bag might be useful to bring as an extra layer but is by no means required. There are more blankets than we know what to do with, really. The property is near Marquette but not in it. That is just where I will greet you and where you can stock up on whatever you need in the way of food, writing materials, etc. before heading into the wilderness for retreat. Ask questions. I will answer anything that won't spoil the adventure.
