Description
“The Burrow” is a self-contained cottage on a 100 acre wildlife sanctuary just 5km from the centre of Mittagong. Once you arrive, it's just you and a few hundred kangaroos and a wombat or two. We invite you to take in nature at your own pace in this peaceful & private setting. “The Burrow” is a hand-built, mud-brick cottage set on the Southern Highlands of NSW. It's quirky yet very comfortable. With nature & wildlife all around we want you to feel like you're 1000 miles from anywhere. The space The cottage itself has been refurbished for comfortable stays whilst still maintaining its rustic charm. Two large double bedrooms each with an ensuite ensure privacy for multiple couples with a large open family room and kitchen for socialising. “The Burrow” has double glazed windows and the mud-brick walls provide insulation keeping the space toasty warm in winter and pleasantly cool in summer. Plenty of firewood is provided so you stoke up the wood heater and relax. We also have Daikin reverse cycle air conditioning. What makes the space so special is the outlook onto the farm and the wildlife who live there. We have recently improved the driveway and cottage surrounds to improve access. Guest access There is 100+ acres for you to explore and enjoy. You’re bound to see an abundance of wildlife including dozens of kangaroos who frequently graze right up to the house. It’s estimated that 30+ wild wombats live on the property and although not as commonly spotted as kangaroos and wallabies, they are always about and if you’d like to see a wombat in the wild, let your hosts know and they’ll give you some tips on where to look. If you take a walk down to the little creek that meanders through the property you are in for a treat. A resident family of Lyre birds live down from the house and if you’re quiet, you may just get a glimpse of them. The property also has Koalas and although quite rare, they are there, hanging out in the eucalypts along the creek. The trick to spotting a Koala is not to look up, but first, to look for scratch marks on the trees and then look up. If you’re a bushwalker then you are going to be right in your element. The well-known Box Vale Track starts right at the doorstep with lots of short tracks to explore or for the more adventurous you can visit the spectacular 40 Foot Falls about a 3km walk starting at your doorstep. Other things to note Check in is via a key in the lock-box at the door. The code will be provided prior to your arrival. The main shopping centre is 5 minute’s drive (6km’s) from the house. There is an abundance of wineries in the region and the property adjoins “Tertini” winery who offer a wonderful cellar-door experience. A large outdoor dining table and umbrella make the perfect spot for a leisurely lunch or evening sunset drink. "The Burrow" gets its name from our wombat friends who live in burrows around the property. You might notice some black hoops across the paddocks. These represent active wombat burrows (and also act as markers so no-one falls in). Note, there is no wi-fi at The Burrow although reception is good. Don't forget that you are in The Southern Highlands of NSW, one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in Australia. Some of our favorite attractions which are just minutes away include, Bendooley Book Barn, Bradman Oval, Lake Alexandria & the Historic village of Berrima. Registration Details PID-STRA-20976-2
