Description
An après-ski paradise is just a 10 minutes from Stratton Mountain. 25 minutes from Mount Snow or Magic Mountain. It’s on the edge of the village of Jamaica. It’s not in the sticks, so not completely silent. You’ll hear the sounds of life along with the sounds of our babbling brook. Forget the crowds on the mountain. Relax in our saltwater hot tub then walk two minutes over to River & Rye our local whisky bar/restaurant for live music, or just pick up some food & drinks at West River Provisions. The space Before there was air conditioning there was Vermont. Wealthy urbanites have been coming to Vermont in the Summer to cool off and escape for years: In the Fall for the colorful foliage, in the Winter for skiing and snowboarding and in the Spring for some serious river kayaking. It has been said Norman Mailer stayed here after writing The Naked and The Dead. Kipling wrote The Jungle Book nearby. George Winston made epic music on his Windham Hill Records label here. My house is the perfect Vermont escape especially for families with kids over five years old. Unlike Stratton, Jamaica is a real, year round ‘Norman Rockwell style’ New England village, where it doesn’t feel like a ghost town in the off season, yet it’s just minutes away from over 5 ski areas during the ski season. Stratton, Mount Snow, Bromley, Magic Mountain, Okemo, take your pick! My house has a large screened in porch with a fireplace, a gas grill just outside the kitchen, a ceiling fan and a salt water hot tub, which is used year round. Whether it’s for enjoying Apres Ski or relaxing on a cool Summer night by the fire with a fine whisky, the porch is my favorite room in the house. This is not a small cramped cabin in the woods. The porch alone is bigger than most tiny homes. It’s a large, comfortable home with a well equipped, eat-in-kitchen that will sit 6-8 guests at the farm table and 3 more at the bar. The screened-in porch is capable of seating 12-14 guests for a fireside dinner at our two folding beer garden tables. With two king bedrooms and one Queen, three couples can easily stay along with a few kids and each couple feel like they have their own private suite. Kids have more than a few places to hang away from the adults. Whether it’s playing a board game, horseshoes, cards, ping pong or darts or watching Netflix on one of the smart flat screen TVs or just reading a good book in one of the hammocks, they will enjoy their stay even on a rainy day. Did I mention our private beach? Yes, there’s a small, private, sandy, brook-front beach with a hammock, chairs and yoga/meditation platform. Enjoy cocktails or dinner at River & Rye, a very nice whisky bar/restaurant just a two minute walk away. Being in the Green Mountain National Forest, we do lose power occasionally, but not very often, when we do, it’s usually only for about 20 minutes, because we are on the same line as the fire department, where other more secluded houses may be without electricity for several days. Guest access Guests have access to the entire house. The kitchen. The screened porch. The gas grill. The salt water hot tub. The wood burning fireplace on the porch, which can also be used as a charcoal grill or small pizza oven. The kitchen farm table can seat up to 8 adults for a nice candlelight dinner. The breakfast bar next to it can seat 3 adults. Depending on time of year the porch can actually seat at least 12 adults if set up with our two folding beer garden tables and benches for a cozy fireside dining experience on cooler nights. The property also has two outside fire pits. One next to the small sandy beach on the brook. The other in the large fenced yard off the living room perfect for stargazing. There’s not much of a backyard, just a small patio off the screened porch which gets good sun. There are two enormous side yards. One has a brook running through it with a small sandy beach, the other has a large lawn with a garden, fruit trees and berry bushes and is fenced. There are two king beds in the house. While the downstairs guest bedroom is only a queen bed, it can be connected and closed off with the living room, so it’s like it’s own apartment with a semi-private entry and it’s own refrigerator and some small kitchen appliances. We sometimes rent this out separately as the ‘Guest Suite’ and it will sleep 3 adults or a small family comfortably and they will enjoy the gas fireplace and their own flatscreen smart tv. There’s a large family room next to the kitchen with its own flatscreen smart tv, so it’s like having two living rooms. The master suite has a king bed and en-suite bath. There is also another large bedroom with a king bed upstairs which has a nice (seasonal) view of the brook and the West River Valley. It also has a ping pong table and a large flatscreen smart tv. Also upstairs is a smaller more basic bedroom with a bunk bed perfect for kids, but big enough to sleep two adults. Other things to note Dogs are welcome. I have a dog and usually keep her in the large downstairs, kitchen/family room area, There’s a wireless dog fence on the property and half the yard is traditionally fenced. There is an additional charge of $50 for dogs. The house is great for kids over five years old and reasonably mobile seniors. It is an authentic Vermont farmhouse and has a few peculiarities that some with small children have noted as being dangerous, while others think are very cool. The bedroom with the ping pong table was used back when it was really a farmhouse to hang, dry and store herbs. It has a step entry to the stairwell that is rather steep and for that reason it is a room best suited for older kids, teens or an adult couple, not young children or the elderly. Pictures show this, not as dangerous as it might sound.
