"Wimberly Plantation-Gleesom Hall" 3br Guest House
Charming guest house located on the grounds of historic "Gleesom Hall", an antebellum home built in 1844. There are 27 acres to enjoy, with azaleas, dogwoods, camellias, honeysuckle, and wildlife. Located within 25 minutes of Downtown Macon or Warner Robins AFB, and 35 minutes from Dublin. Gleesom Hall is inhabited by 7th and 8th generation descendants of the original family. Great place for enjoying country peace and quiet in a wonderful, historic setting. Gleesom Hall (the big house) was built in apprx 1844. The house and the surrounding 2000 acres were given as a wedding present from Hardy Durham to his daughter, Caroline, upon her marriage to Dr. Henry S. Wimberly. Dr. Wimberly had 23 children and the "schoolroom" addition off of the back porch was constructed to provide a place for a private tutor to instruct the children in primary education. Gleesom Hall was a working cotton plantation until the 1940's, at which time the fields were converted to pine timberland - and the original 2000 acres is still in the family and yields fine Southern Yellow Pine today. There are several outbuildings that are original to the home, including the small "Dairy" structure which was used to store milk and cheese. The floorboards in the Dairy are removable and water or ice when available was used to keep the contents cool. Behind the house, you will notice the brick smokehouse. This is where meat was preserved for later use. All of the bricks used in the smokehouse and main house were formed on site. In fact there is evidence of a pit from which the clay was dug directly behind the smokehouse in the woods. The grounds were originally landscaped with formal gardens designed by a Scottish Landscaper. Little remains of the formal gardens, although some of the groundwork can still be recognized. The house and property have been in the same family for 7 generations now.
