A Morning Mist is a Smith Mountain Lake favorite with families returning year after year. Positioned on a wide cove close to the main channel, it has the perfect combination of low boat traffic and easy access to main lake attractions. Located near Roanoke in south-western Virginia, Smith Mountain Lake is one of the best recreational lakes in the East. With over 600 miles of coastline, the lake offers nearly limitless possibilities for recreation: swimming, boating, water skiing, tubing, and fishing in one of the best lakes for Stripped Bass in the country. On the lake there is fine dining as well as Jimmy-Buffet-esque restaurants right on the water. Roanoke, South-Western Virginia’s largest city, is an absolute charm and only 40 minutes away. (theater, music, museums, farmer’s markets, shopping, airport). There are several wineries in the area as well, two within 2 miles of the house !! Best high-end dinner: - The Landings at Bernard’s Landing. Across the lake, towards the Smith Mountain Lake dam, easy to get to by boat. (accessible by boat) 4. Live music on the weekends at Mango’s 7. Best local winery: - Our neighbors up the road at Hickory Cove and Ramulose Ridge - Runner up - winery at Peaks of Otter 8. Best Local Brewery: - Beale’s brewery, Bedford VA. About 30 minutes away in the cute town of Bedford, VA. Fantastic BBQ and Brisket as well! 9. Best place to rent a boat or wave runner - Bridgewater Marina 10. Best rainy day excursion with the kids: - “Center in the Square” in Roanoke (45 minutes away) – farmers market, fun science museum, transportation (railroad) museum, and very interesting old “Hotel Roanoke” 11. Best place for a movie: - Westlake Cinema in Moneta 12. Best hiking: - Peaks of Otter on the Blue Ridge Parkway (40 minutes away). Great hike (pretty easy) to top of mountain and great views. Easier stroll around the lake in front of the lodge. Also that Lodge at Peaks of Otter is a great place for a meal. 13. Closest Urgent Care: - Velocity Care, part of Carillon Healthcare, 13205 Booker T Washington Hwy. Go to Route 122, head south (left). Cross the bridge. About 4 miles on your right (in office complex, across the street from the Duck-In gas station & convenience store). Last time we checked, hours were: Mon-Sat 8am to 8pm, Sun 10am to 6pm. 14. Best grocery shopping: - Kroger at Westlake Shopping Area in Moneta (south on Rt122 across the Hales Ford Bridge) - Food Lion is closer and good, but selection is more limited. Close-in Directions: From the North: 1) Whether coming through the Lynchburg or Roanoke areas, you will end off on Rt 122 south. 2) After you pass through the small town of Moneta, you will come to an area with a Dollar General, a Food Lion and a traffic light. (If you cross a bridge over the lake, you have gone too far.) 3) At the light, turn left onto Hendricks Store Rd (Rt 655). Continue for 2.1 miles. 4) Turn right onto Hickory Cove Lane (Rt 654). Continue for 2.9 miles (as you go along, bear left at the fork in the road just past Hickory Cove Winery). 5) As you near the end of your 2.9 miles, you will go down a hill and begin to see the lake on both sides of the road. 6) As you climb up the other side, you will notice a large stand of pines on the left. Our driveway (paved) is on the left, just beyond those pines. There is a small sign for “A Morning Mist” Close-in Directions: From the South 1) When coming through the Rocky Mount Area (Route 220), you will end off on Rt 122 north. 2) After you pass Bridgewater Plaza and cross Hales Ford Bridge over the lake, you will come to an area with a Dollar General, a Food Lion and a traffic light. 3) At the light, turn right onto Hendricks Store Rd (Rt 655). Continue for 2.1 miles. (If you cross a bridge over the lake, you have gone too far.) 4) Turn right onto Hickory Cove Lane (Rt 654). Continue for 2.9 miles (as you go along, bear left at the fork in the road just past Hickory Cove Winery). 5) As you near the end of your 2.9 miles, you will go down a hill and begin to see the lake on both sides of the road. 6) As you climb up the other side, you will notice a large stand of pines on the left.
