We have something called load shedding in South Africa. “Load shedding is a measure of last resort taken by Eskom (South Africa’s largest/only producer of electricity) to cut electricity to areas when power demand begins to exceed possible supply. To avoid a nationwide blackout and total collapse of the power grid, Eskom rations the available supply between different districts according to a published schedule. This schedule may change or be implemented at short notification on different stages” For this schedule it is proposed that you download the EskomSePush APP, for apple and android, to use during your stay in South Africa. You can select different areas on the APP. The area for our house is De Rust (7) Eskom Direct, Emakhazen, Mpumalanga or Hazyview Ext1 (7), Eskom Direct Mbombela, Mpumalanga. It will just make your life easier if you know when you will encounter loadshedding and when not as it is totally unpredictable. We will also send you a link to the APP. Please contact either me or Elna should you encounter any problems with it. We installed a solar/inverter/battery system to make it easier for all of us. Once loadshedding is implemented the battery system will immediately kick in and in most instances, you won’t even notice it. You will have power in all plugs (e.g., TV Wi-Fi, fans etc.) and lights, however there will be no power going to the geyser, stove, and swimming pool pump. KINDLY DONT USE ANY AIRCONDITIONERS, THE MICORWAVE FOR MORE THAN 10 MIN, THE OVEN OR ANY OTHER EQUIPMENT USING AN ELEMENT AS THIS WILL USE THE BATTERY BACKUP POWER AND YOU MAY END UP IN THE DARK WITH NO ELECTRICITY. The gas stove will allow you to make food and the solar geyser will assist with hot water if there is enough sunlight. On average the electricity will be down for 2-3 hours at a time and may vary between 1 – 4 slots per day depending on the National situation.
