Penpont is the birthplace of Joseph Thomson, the African explorer and the home of world renowned artist Andy Goldsworthy. Not far from Dumfries House, Crawick Multiverse, Charles Jencks' Garden of Cosmic Speculation, Craigdarroch House where Annie Lawrie (of the famous song) lived after her marriage and the Galloway Forest and Dark Sky Observatory. If art is your pleasure, there are sculptures by Henry Moore, Rodin and Epstein nearby and many interesting local artists offer visits to their studios showing a highly eclectic range of works during Spring Fling weekend at the end of May and throughout the year. Robert Burns farmed at Ellisland, just 10 miles away and Greyfriars Church was the scene of the killing of the Red Comyn by Robert the Bruce. Penpont lies approximately two miles west of the River Nith surrounded by the gentle hills which afford superb views.
