King's Lynn's maritime past is still evident today, with historic merchant's houses that extend down to the river and a customs house by the harbour. This market town has been an important port going back as far as the 12th century, today it still has plenty of historical buildings, narrow cobbled streets, grand squares and two markets. Uncover its past as a major trading port on the on the self-guided Hanse Trail and Maritime Trail. Or board The King's Lynn ferry from where you can see the maritime architecture of the quayside area of the town. This cottage holiday is the perfect base from which to explore the expansive beauty of Norfolk; places of interest in the area include Oxburgh Hall, a 15th century moated manor house with a wonderfully romantic location, panoramic views, beautiful gardens and stunning architecture. Castle Rising dating back to the 12th century offers a fascinating insight into British history and has green expanses that are perfect for picnics in the warmer months. If you fancy a relaxing day out hop on the steam train to explore the surrounding area. Close by are peaceful walks and flat cycling routes, within the town an urban park is perfect for escaping the hustle and bustle of the town's centre. However, if you're interested in the livelier side of King's Lynn then you'll find plenty to keep you occupied in the centre, including the Vancouver shopping district and a number of bars, restaurants and entertainment venues.
