Description
Relax by a cozy window with your café, as the swallows fly in spirals high above the river and the sun shines in. Explore this inspiring and beautiful village on foot & nature in la Mer des Roches with its endless hiking paths & gourmet Chez Fouzia! The space La mason des Hirondelles, the swallows nest, is a petit medieval stone house in an ancient four story chateau rising majestically out of the limestone riverbank in the thousand year old village of Sauve, France. West of Avignon, Sauve is situated in the Gard region forty minutes from the Mediterranean sea and an hour from Nîmes and Montpellier. Perched on a hillside in the foothills of the Cevennes, two charming levels face east to the breath-taking views some fifty feet above the Vidourle River burgeoning with fish, ducks, geese and heron and supporting a vast population of swallows which fly above in beautiful blue skys. A narrow rue called the Chemin de la Source descends from the Rue de Veux Pont to the arched burdandy front door and continues down to the source and the Vidourle river. Up at the corner of the rue a charming gourmet epicerie, Chez Fouzia, is conveniently situated and delightful artisan shops & galleries opening onto la Rue de Pont Vieux. A five minute walk up through the village leads one to the La Mer des Roches, a wilderness area full of pristine beauty and solitude and a vast network of hiking trails. The top floor of the apartment has an arched ceiling comprising the kitchen, dining and sitting area, a cozy bedroom with a slightly shorter built in single bed, and the bathroom with a shower, sink, toilet, and washing machine. Please Note: ceiling height in the top floor is less than standard height and may seem a little low for someone over 6'2" or 188cm. Also the single bed is SHORTER than standard. For comfort, maximum 165cm in height is best. Below, down the solid stone stairs, the magical curtained sleeping chamber with its queen sized bed can be found. It is comfortably cool in summer when the upstairs may be much warmer due to the bedrock wall at the head of the bed which maintains a coolness quite agreeable when the temperatures rise dramatically. This room is quite like sleeping in a cavern which opens on to a spacious salon including the original fireplace, a comfortable sofa and a grand window through which the morning sun shines. With respect to its historical architectural origins, this gîte was sensitively restored to preserve the original terre cuite tile floors, wood beams, carved stone stairs and sink along with the vintage fireplace (which is strictly decorative in this century). This is a dream come true for romantics. Come fall back in time…. Guest access The spacious Place de Jean Astruc with its beautiful fountain is only steps away at the top of the Chemin de la Source. It is often of the site of musical or theatrical performances and is a great place to relax, read a book, sit in the sun, or shade, take a cool drink at the café in the evening and enjoy village life. In July and August the lively music events in the Place usually end before midnight. If you are inclined to prefer quiet every single evening of the week you may prefer an accomodation further away. As the owner, I adore the cultural events and am quite content to employ earplugs if the occasional band performs past my desired bedtime.
