Modern, self-contained apartment in a beautiful part of Poland
Nestling at the start of one of the the most attractive tracks leading up to the landmark Trzy Korony mountain in the beautiful Pieniński Park Narodowy (Pieniny National Park), the modern, well-equipped Leśnik Apartment is a rare find! It is ideally placed for enjoying all of the area's many attractions. Flooded with light and just a stone's throw from the Dunajec river, the apartment serves as a perfect base for hikers, ramblers, rafters, climbers, bikers and skiers looking to explore the beautiful Pieniny National Park and the nearby region. With free on-site parking, the apartment sleeps up to five guests (one double bed, one double sofabed and one single folding bed), and boasts a fully-equipped kitchen, lounge, separate bedroom, and bathroom with shower. Furthermore, a south-facing balcony provides a perfect setting for relaxation on a warm summer evening. An additional terrace provides further outside space, whilst guests are also welcome to use the garden belonging to the main house. Leśnik Apartment is the entire top story of the house, and has its own separate entrance (Note: there are stairs to climb, so it is not suitable for those with restricted mobility). The apartment is located just a 90-minute drive from Kraków's Jean Paul II Airport at Balice, and is a short walk from the centre of the bustling village of Krościenko nad Dunajcem, established in the 12th century and sitting on the historically important Via Regia trade route. Just beyond the gates to the property lies the Pieniny National Park, within which sits the famous summit of Trzy Korony (Three Crowns) 982m above sea level. Thirty-four kilometres of well-marked trails lead up to and through the park, and are popular with hikers of all abilities. Leśnik Apartment is also at the start of the Szlak Papieski, the beautiful trail where Karol Wojtyła, later to become Pope John Paul II, used to enjoy hiking whilst Bishop of Kraków. Pieniny National Park is home to some 6,500 animal species, including deer, lynx and otters. Heavily wooded in parts, it is also home to thousands of species of plants, including an incredible 640 types of mushrooms! A short (6km) drive or cycle ride away lies the resort town of Szczawnica, famous for its therapeutic thermal springs. Szczawnica's longest ski slope, Palenica, can be reached by cable car from the centre of the town. Another nearby ski resort is Czorsztyn, which sits high above the remarkable man-made Czortstyn Lake. The Dunajec river was dammed here in 1994 to create a striking feature that has the ruins of Czorsztyn Castle on one bank and the famous well-preserved 14th-century Niedzica Castle on the other. Only a 20-minute drive away, Niedzica Castle is worth visiting for its historical artefacts and magnificent views of the lake and the Pieniny mountains beyond. Thrill-seekers will certainly want to experience a raft ride on the Dunajec river, which cuts a dramatic path through the Pieniny National Park. Departing from Krościenko market square by bus, guests are taken upstream where they can ride a traditional raft back to Krościenko piloted by local guides dressed in the regional "góral" (highlander) costumes. Those wishing to experience even greater thrills can hire a kayak and undertake the scenic journey under their own steam. Adventurous kids will love visiting one of the two aerial parks in the village. Leśnik Apartment was started by Bożena's late father, Marian, who was a forester - "leśnik" in Polish. It was fully renovated in 2019.
