They are neighbourhoods completely dug in the calcareous rock that were inhabited in ancient times (recently repopulated). In the “Sassi”, scattered among the houses, stand several Rock Churches, which bear witness of different and ancient periods. On the 2nd of July is celebrated the feast of the “Madonna della Bruna”. According to tradition in the evening the statue of the Holy Mother is carried in procession on a Triumphal Wagon, along the main streets of Matera. The Wagon is made of ‘cartapesta’ and it is considered an art opera. Really, every year, some local artisans rebuild it because of the masses of people, following the same ancient ritual, assault and destroy the chariot, fruit of months of hardwork. Matera is the town of ‘environment’. Thanks to the close bond between man and nature, many uncontaminated and fascinating places have been preserved. The town boasts an abundant presence of Rupestrian Churches, and among them the most interesting is the Crypt of the Original Sin. As regards the fauna, it is important to point out the presence of the peregrine hawk. Moreover, in the territory there is the Faunistic Oasis of the Saint Julian Lake (5 minutes from the holiday cottage). We wait for you, glad to meet you. Registration Details IT077014B501093001
