Description

Kellaways House Cottage is located in the small village of East Tytherton, Wiltshire close to the nearby market towns of Chippenham and Calne in the north of the county. Its rural setting provides a tranquil atmosphere without being too far from local amenities. The area is popular with walkers and cyclists, but if you want a bit more excitement, it is also perfectly situated to explore places further a feld in Wiltshire, East Somerset and the South Cotswolds. The space Kellaways Cottage is a part of Kellaways House, our family home. The buildings were once part of the Moravian Church, and has had many functions and interesting occupants. Kellaways House was built in 1785 initially as a home for single sisters of the Moravian Church, quickly becoming a girls school a short time afterwards. Educating women in these times was very progressive. The school continued until the outbreak of the Second World War, where it became the temporary headquarters of the Moravian Church in the UK during the Blitz in London. After the War, it soon became a private residence being owned amongst others by modernist artist Richard Smith. The part of the house you will be staying at was a later addition to the school in 1830s, originally for the headmistresses as their quarters and study. Guest access Although Kellaways house Cottage is part of the main house, it can be will be sealed off from the main house for the duration of your visit using the internal doors. The cottage has an entrance and access to the bedroom and bathroom is via a second stairway. Unfortunately because the accommodation is across two floors with steep stairs, it is not suitable for wheelchair access , people with mobility problems or small children. There is ample parking on the large drive at the front of the house. There is also a garage to store bikes if required. Guest are welcome to enjoy the shared house gardens at the rear of the house. Other things to note The cottage has central heating shared with the main house. Radiators in each room have separate thermostatic valves, but the heating controls are managed centrally. On the cold days in autumn, winter and spring the heating will come up twice a day in the morning and late afternoon/ evening depending on the weather conditions. There is an electric heater provided for the guests to use in the bedroom . Please contact us if you need more information. There is a wood burner in the sitting room, please note that whilst three logs will be provided any more logs can be purchased at cost or guests are welcome to get their own logs from the local fuel stations. The bed in the bedroom is a king size with a highly sprung mattress filled with cashmere. There are both synthetic fibre filled and feather filled pillows and duvet. The bathroom is reached by four steps going down, and is located opposite the bedroom. There is a towel rail which is plumed into hot water supply and is warm/ hot most of the time.
