Stay in a rustic and quirky restored railway carriage two minutes walk from the sea. With original features (including wooden carriage walls), cosy wood-burning stove, kitchen, washer and bathroom with hot shower. 1 double bed, 2 singles. No wifi! The space The railway carriage was decommissioned from the Isle of Wight’s rolling stock many years ago. We don’t know exactly how old it is, but we’ve uncovered graffiti inside dating from April 1891. It now rests in a field owned by Chilton Farm on the south coast of the island, a two minute walk from the crumbling clifftops of the island's Jurassic coast. We’ve renovated the carriage inside, uncovering the old doors and the wooden panels of the compartments. If the weather's fine it's a great location for walks along the cliffs or the beach, or else up onto the chalk downs behind. We’ve installed a wood-burning stove so it’s also a cosy place to shelter from the storms if the bad weather turns bad. There's a minimum 4-night stay, and we offer a discount for a week or more. Check-in days are limited to Thursday and Saturday due to the availability of our cleaning person. Guest access You'll have the whole carriage to yourselves. Occasionally our neighbour stays in the cabin next door, but she's very friendly. Other things to note PLEASE NOTE: The lane from the Military Road to the carriage is very much a farm track, and is often quite potholed and muddy. Take care to drive slowly, especially if it's been raining. The carriage doorways are rather low, so take care if you're tall! Because of the carriage being quite remote, there is no rubbish collection. There are recycling points in Brighstone and Freshwater (leave non-recyclable rubbish for us to remove, or if you're staying for a long time use public bins in the village). The charm and beauty of the carriage lies in its simplicity - those seeking luxury (and wifi reception!) should probably look elsewhere!
