Whether you like to go fishing, go hiking in the mountains, dive or simply take it easy and enjoy Lofoten - we welcome you to a wonderful holiday. ---------- The story of Brettesnes The good harbour ending in a large sandy beach, as well as being a convenient location for access to the fishing grounds, make it natural to assume that Brettesnes early became a settlement. The origin of the name is not quite clear, but it is assumed to be related to the mountain Bretten that rises just behind the settlement at Brettesnes. Exact historical information on the development of Brettesnes is available only from the 1800s. However it has been established that the first yacht skipper resided in Brettesnes in about the 17th century, and that in 1770 an inn was run on the site. From the mid-19th century, Brettesnes was a large farm. Borkvika, Fremnesvika and Gullvika were households tied to this and were required to work on the farm. Around the south-facing harbour lies the settlement scattered and roughly in a horseshoe shape. Today Brettesnes has only a few permanent residents. Boat route Brettesnes-Bergen-Newcastle At the turn of the century, a ship was on a scheduled route between Brettesnes-Bergen-Newcastle. Hundreds of people were affiliated to the herring oil industry at Brettesnes, and the place was an important trading site in Lofoten. English school Brettesnes had an English school and along the narrow roads the ladies walked along in the latest fashions from Paris. This was in stark contrast to the small fishing village of Svolvær which was not as central and international as Brettesnes. The factory at Brettesnes However what has mattered most to the place to this day, and which one cannot help mentioning when talking about Brettesnes, was the establishment of a guano factory in 1872. The factory was planned and built by the English, and the company was called «The Allright Guano Co Limited». The first factory burned down in 1877, but was re-built in 1878 in stone that was shipped all the way from England. The first factory in Norway for the production of herring meal and herring oil was started at Brettesnes in 1884. Initially the focus was on herring meal and herring oil, but the business was gradually extended to include the processing of cod liver into cod liver oil. The oil was initially used for light and fuel, but, from the 1890s, herring meal was also produced. Around World War I, Nordland was the leading county with nearly half of the factories in the country. Nordland had 12 factories, Troms and Finnmark six factories, and the other counties 17 factories. Towards the end of the 20th century, the factory began to have serious problems and, in 1990, the era that had lasted more than a hundred years was over. One can understand that the factory has meant a lot to the place. Brettesnes has also played an important role as a fishing village. Good harbour conditions and a short distance to the fishing grounds meant that especially small boats have used Brettesnes as a base for fishing in Lofoten.
