Description
The Barn This building was originally a purpose built barn for feed and equipment storage. It has now been transformed into a two bedroom cottage with large windows and patio doors giving spectacular views down to the lighthouse at Portnahaven and the surrounding area. It is an excellent place to explore the extensive range of flowers and wild life native to Islay. The space Upstairs there are two bedrooms which can be set up as twin or super-king bedded rooms. In between the bedrooms is a shower room. On entering The Barn there is a utility room with washing machine and tumble dryer. The bottom floor of the cottage is taken up predominately by a large open plan kitchen/dining/living room. The kitchen is well equipped with Oven/hob/fridge/freezer and dishwasher. We also have installed a hot water tap for teas & coffees. There is a large dining table and chairs situated next to a patio door size window and a living area with patio doors onto a private outdoor seating space. There is a small hallway at the bottom of the staircase next to which is a family bathroom. There is a sofa bed in the living area (please request bedding if required) along with a Smart HD TV & free internet. Ballymeanach is an owner-occupied croft situated on the beautiful Rhinns of Islay; which is recognised both internationally (Ramsar site) and domestically (SSSI) as a place of importance for the conservation of native flora and fauna. The croft is actively farmed, in a non-intensive, traditional manner and has a growing herd of native Galloway cattle. Over the years some of the buildings on the croft had, unfortunately, fallen into disrepair and so it was decided to regenerate part of the existing steading (comprising a cottage, smithy and barn) by the creation of three cottages to be used for self-catering accommodation; two of the new cottages are one-bedroom, and the third (the barn conversion) is a two-bedroom. These properties would suit couples, small families or family groups, looking for a relaxing holiday on an active croft where they can participate in outdoor activities and make the most of the outstanding beauty of the local area; for example, cycling, birdwatching and walking. The croft is less than a mile from the village of Portnahaven so is within walking distance of local amenities -the local hotel and shop. There is also a small Celtic Craft Shop across the road from the cottages selling items made from leather/slate/deer antlers etc. Portnahaven Hall has become very popular for weddings and our little complex would be a great place for family groups or groups of friends to be able to stay together. Other things to note When booking your stay please book your ferry well in advance at the Calmac website. Please let us know when booking your stay if you require the beds to be made up as super king or twin beds and if you require bedding for sofa-bed. Please ask for travel cot/high chair if required.
