Description

Our unusual timber house is set in a quiet wooded estate, a short distance from Huntingdon, next to Grafham Water nature reserve with its excellent walks, cycling paths, sailing, birdwatching and fishing. Please send me a message before requesting to book, as the house is also advertised elsewhere and may no longer be available. Many thanks. The space The two story house is one of twenty modern wooden cabins set within trees and landscaping on a private estate near the village of Grafham, next to Grafham Water. The house has one double bedroom, one twin bedroom and another single bed on the open landing. The main living space is on the ground-floor: an open-plan sitting room, kitchen and dining room, with south-facing glass doors that open out onto a large raised verandah. The sunny main bedroom is on the first floor and has a double bed with a memory foam mattress. The second bedroom is on the ground floor and has two single beds with pocket sprung mattresses that can be clipped together to make a super-king. The additional sleeping area on the open landing also has a single bed with a pocket sprung mattress. The kitchen has an electric cooker with two ovens, a touch control ceramic hob, a microwave and fridge with freezer compartment. The bathroom has a generous tub, a power shower with unlimited hot water, a beautiful cork floor, heated towel rail and washer/dryer. There are wall-mounted electric heaters throughout the house. The stairs are fairly narrow, so not suitable for the less mobile. Guest access Guests will have sole use of the cabin. There is one parking space directly behind the house, and further guest parking at the entrance to the site. Bed linen and towels are provided. Please note: we do not accept dogs. Other things to note SURROUNDING AREA From Westwood Lodge it's a short walk down the lane or across fields to Grafham Water. You can walk right round the reservoir, though be aware it can get busy with cyclists and dog walkers at the weekend. Turn right outside Westwood Lodge and you soon reach woods, thick with bluebells in the spring. Grafham Water is one of the best birding sites in the country and the first of a series of bird hides is about a half hour walk from the house. Serious hikers may want to keep walking round the water to reach the hides on the other side close to Perry. For a less strenuous option, you can drive and park in the pay and display car park. A designated Site of Special Scientific Interest, Grafham Water is a wetland habitat, where over 120 species are recorded each year, including rare birds such as the Grey Phalarope and the occasional Great Northern Diver. It's home to flocks of wintering water birds, significant numbers of Coot, Tufted Duck and Great Crested Grebe, and other winter visitors such as Pochard, Goldeneye, Goosander, Smew and Widgeon. There are five bird hides around the reservoir. Several ponds are home to dragonflies and Great Crested Newts. Two ancient woods, Littless and Savages Spinney have Bluebells, Nuthatches, Greater Spotted Woodpecker and Glow Worms. The grasslands contain orchids and several species of butterfly. WATERSPORTS Grafham Water is also one of the country's best inland sailing facilities and the Grafham Water Centre offers organised courses in sailing, windsurfing, canoeing and power-boating, archery and climbing, as well as occasional jazz and quilting weekends. Please contact the centre for dates and details. ANGLING Anglian Water issues permits for fishing and offers boat rental on Grafham Water. There is Trout, Pike and Zander in Grafham Water. Please contact Anglian Water fishing lodge for details. OTHER ACTIVITIES For more things to do in the area, including historic sites, restaurants and children's activities take a look at our guidebook - link top right. WILDLIFE AT WESTWOOD LODGE The house is surrounded by trees and nature. The living room looks out across the verandah to a beautiful mix of native trees species and the main bedroom has an uninterupted view across the treetops. You can see and hear all sorts of birds that make their home in the trees, including some rare species. Rabbits and ducks are frequent visitors, as well as the occasional deer. Being so close to nature, and being a wooden house, some smaller creatures do make their way inside, particular spiders. There is a good chance you may come across one of our eight legged friends during your stay - whether a teeny money spider or a larger daddy long legs. If the thought of that upsets you, this house may not be for you. (Personally, I'm a big fan - spiders protect the house from flies and other more annoying insects.)
