The Quadrangle
The Quadrangle
Description
The Quadrangle is a beautifully converted Victorian farmstead able to accommodate groups of 12+ for holidays, retreats, workshops, film shoots and more, just 40 minutes from London. It features beautiful gardens and a woodland orchard, a grand barn and open-plan living spaces, two well-equipped kitchens, two dormitories, four separate bedrooms and river for wild swimming. Please note we have close neighbours so can't host parties or weddings. The space Our family has looked after the Quadrangle for over five decades, and in 2007 it was established as a trust to protect its unique architecture and wildlife and to be home to an arts, ecology and wellbeing organisation. The main living space, the Granary features a large double height, open plan living room and kitchen, comfortable seating (which can be easily moved to reconfigure the space), and is filled with tapestries, paintings, toys and books from around the world. It has a unique character that is warm, homely and playful. Its large wood-burning stove and Rayburn oven keeps it cosy in the winter and you can open the large doors to the yard and main barn in the summer. On the first floor there is a twin bedroom (that can be made into a king) and large bathroom with a stand-alone cast-iron roll top bath (great for up to four young children!). In the eaves on the third floor are two twin rooms (also convertible into kings) and another bathroom with a shower and elegant roll-top bath. On the ground floor there is a shower room and toilet. The Granary opens onto the gallery in the Big Barn – the centrepiece of the Quadrangle. Unconverted but with a timber floor and high ceilings this is a great space for games, performances, roller skating, workshops, yoga, filming and photography and exhibitions. It’s not heated or insulated so you need to be pretty active in the winter to keep warm! In the summer the Big Barn can be used as a giant dining room or extra living space. There's a table tennis table, skateboards, pogo stick, unicycle and other stuff for kids. There are extra tables and seating available for events. Following the stairs up into the roof joists of the Big Barn you find yourself in the first dormitory with ten beds that leads to the second dormitory with seven beds. This is the first floor of the recently converted Shepherds Barn, which you can also access from the yard. On the ground floor there’s a open plan living room and kitchen, one double bedroom and toilet/shower room. The Permaculture Forest Garden field has space for lots of tents, compost toilets and access to the river for swimming. This is rented out separately but hire of /exclusive use of the whole site is possible and provides more private/family or workshop spaces. We have a partnership with a local glamping organisation who can provide kitted out bell tents for bigger groups. Guest access The Quadrangle is large and spacious and there is plenty of outside space. One half of the buildings, and some of the fields, are owned by lovely neighbours so it is crucial that large groups respect their privacy and peace. Very sorry but that does mean no parties or weddings. Yard Facilities - two toilets and one shower are located in the yard and are available for use on a non-exclusive basis. The Cart Shed - space to be used as an open-air café, bar or food preparation area. Grounds - Lawn and garden with access to the river for swimming
