You'll feel the Magic of the Maine islands in cozy Oar Island Cottage. One of only two houses on a private island, it's the perfect balance between wilderness and comfort. A five-minute boat-ride brings you to a world of bird-calls, private swimming, and the scented pine forest. Have some high-quality family time by choosing something from our bookshelves, puzzles, or board games, or go see what fish are biting. Come see why so many guests love Oar Island! The Cottage is the more spacious house, perfect for larger families and groups (comfortably sleeps 6 people). With more amenities than you might expect on a 2-house island, it offers full-time utility electricity, hot and cold running water, telephone, cozy wood stove, fully-equipped kitchen, a bathroom with shower and tub, and radio. Spend some high-quality family time with our wide selection of books and board games! KITCHEN: - full size electric refrigerator / freezer - gas range - double stainless steel sink - microwave - coffee maker - toaster oven - electric mixer - large collection of cookware and baking tools – including, of course, everything you’ll need to cook and eat your fresh lobster. - breathtaking scenery from the windows! - We provide a full pantry with most food staples. MASTER BEDROOM: - double bed - two bureaus - clothes rack and hangers - electric fan - blankets, pillows and mattress pads - please bring your own sheets and pillow-cases TWIN BEDROOMS (x2) Each has: - two bunk-beds - bureau and chair - electric fan - blankets, pillows and mattress pads - please bring your own sheets and pillow-cases Cots are available for any extra friends, and you can tuck a small child into the crib provided. - full tub and shower - sink - pump toilet - shelves for toiletries - mirror The front porch has a screened portion, ready with a table and benches for dining al fresco. The open-air section has a big porch swing that's popular with all ages. Parking is available from the marina (Broad Cove Marine Services). The marina has a limit of one car per rental party. If you need to bring more than one car for your group, extra parking is available at the town landing, just up the river. Oar Island itself (¼ mile from the mainland) can only be reached by boat. Feel free to bring your own boat if you have one - if not, we offer two motor-boats for rent. The boat landing at Oar Island is in water except at the lowest tides, when you might have to wait an hour (plus or minus) to get off. Consulting a tide calendar will tell you what times to avoid arriving or leaving. During your stay, we offer 24-hour phone support. The manager at the local marina may be consulted for general advice, local fishing tips, and directions to local attractions. The marina may charge you a fee if you request services. If your stay happens to coincide with ours, we will be available when needed but will respect your privacy. This is a rare opportunity to live the life on a private island! Go kayaking, fishing, whale-watching, camping in your own private forest (but no campfires are allowed per Bremen Maine Fire Department), and explore the countless nearby islands in stunning Muscongus Bay. Sit on the porch or the rocks watching the lobster boats come close to the shore while hauling traps. You can only reach Oar Island, ¼ mile from the mainland, by boat. We offer a 16' aluminum skiff with 9.9 hp motor at $700 per week, or you may bring your own. Oar Island has its own private dock, and parking for one vehicle is free at the marina. 1. Part of island living is respecting our precious fresh-water well, including: taking short showers (aim for 1 minute of running water), turning off the water while shaving, brushing teeth and lathering hands, and washing dishes with one sink of soapy water (not under running water). We provide a pump toilet that uses conserved rainwater to flush. Our visitors do their part by conserving our island fresh-water source! 3. We ask each guest to complete a simple clean-up routine before departing. A checklist is posted in both Cottage and Cabin kitchens and should take only 30-45 minutes to complete. Our philosophy is: leave it the way you’d like to find it. (See our website for more details). 4. Unfortunately, we cannot accomodate people with accessibility challenges. Please contact us if you have any questions. 5. We provide blankets, pillows, mattress pads and bedspreads, but make sure to bring your own bedsheets, pillowcases, bath towels and kitchen linens. 6. If arriving before mid-June or after early September, plan on chilly nights and mornings. Bring warm clothing and expect to use the woodstove. We provide plenty of firewood so feel free to use what you need.
