About a 1-hour drive from Portland on the base of Mount Hood, Zigzag Mountain Farm offers the perfect escape from the city with 50 acres of meadows and forest, bordering thousands of acres of national forest. Camp in your own tent or van, stay in one of 8 yurts or the 2-bedroom original cabin. The farm is home to an organic garden, campfire circle, picnic area, a city bus with a campers' kitchen, outdoor seating area with BBQ, kids play structure, hiking trails and a year-round creek. You can select a place for your van/camper in Creek Lane or around Calen's meadow. Creek Lane has 4 pull-in sites. Calen’s Meadow is an open area near the main house. It’s ideal for van camping along the drive. The inner space of this meadow is good for tenting. All spaces are first come, first serve. We don't have dedicated sites nor hook-ups. The rate includes up to 2 adults and 3 children (12 and under). Additional person in same van: $5/person plus lodging tax. Picnic tables are on our deck and outside the campers' kitchen in a converted city bus. You are welcome to hike the trails, check out the garden, use the shared campfire circle, and play structure. You have access to a BBQ, camper stove, and microwave on our deck, and during the summer month (Memorial Day Weekend through the end of September) to our campers' kitchen in a converted city bus (4-burner stove top; you bring your own pots/pans/plates, etc.). We have one big communal campfire pit (we provide fire wood). Bathrooms are shared and have hot water. There's also a pit toilet! You can take short hikes on our 50 acre property, which is mostly forest. Two trail heads are within walking distance of our property (Zigzag Mountain Trail and Castle Canyon Trail). We are between our Hostel and Guesthouse in NW Portland and the farm. Our onsite farm managers, Ashley and Kenny, are happy to provide local information and orient you to the property. We have an active organic garden that supplies a local restaurant and our own cafe at our hostel in Portland, The Hostel Cafe. We have a few helpers (through WWOOF, Willing Workers on Organic Farms), who live and work on the farm. They are mostly college students and great to have a chat with and hear their stories! The neighborhood is thousands of acres of forest. We border Mt Hood National Forest to the east. To the west are the backsides of cabins and houses along Lolo Pass Rd. No houses are visible. Residents include black bear, the occasional cougar (who stay clear of people), deer, ... You walk to two national forest trail heads: Zigzag Mountain Trail and Castle Canyon Trail. Our favorite restaurants within a short drive (1-2 miles): Skyway Bar and Grill (great outdoor patio, reasonable price with a good chef), Wrapitude (wraps and burgers), Rendezvous (pricey but good), Zigzag Inn for Pizza and Italian dishes, Al Forno Ferruzza (best pizza on the mountain; wood fired oven), and El Burro Loco for good Tex Mex. The closest grocery store (Thriftway) and gas station are 1.5 miles away. From Hwy 26 turn north on Lolo Pass Road, 1/2 mile turn right on E. Mountain Dr, 1/4 mile turn left into the farm. You can get to within 1 km of the farm on public transportation form Portland by taking the MAX train blue line to Gresham Transit station, transfer to SAM bus to Sandy, transfer to Mountain Express Bus, all for under $5. Drinking water is available (please bring a reusable water bottle); pets are allowed on-leash; no amplified music or loud parties to help everyone enjoy our mountain property; wifi is available on the deck at the main house (not in the yurts!); pack it in, pack it out (except for your compost; we'll use it for our organic garden).
