Welcome to our private woodland retreat! This stylish and secluded mid-century modern guesthouse is nestled on five acres in horse country in Highland, Maryland. Totally separate from our owners home, our guesthouse combines the serenity, privacy, and safety you crave with all the conveniences of modern life including: a full bath; kitchenette; internet; and a screened porch with access to our beautiful lighted and heated swimming pool and adjacent walking trails. The guest house offers second story living in a unique woodland setting. The flat is a large, stylishly furnished apartment with all the comforts and conveniences you’d expect. The contemporary design has a vaulted ceiling and 20-ft high windows with a spectacular unobstructed view of the forested hillside below. Features include: a new queen-sized bed, ample seating, a bistro table with settings for two, internet, and a big screen HD television with Netflix streaming video. If you’re lucky you just may see our resident Red Fox, Barred Owls or Pileated Woodpecker. You enter the house via a private patio within the large fenced yard and pool. The patio has rocking chairs to lull away the hours with a good book and a cup of Joe or glass of wine. Just off the patio at ground level is your private full bathroom complete with hair dryer and a changing room should you decide to take advantage of the heated swimming pool. We have a charcoal grill available on request. Off of the patio, you enter the is the kitchenette complete with a Keurig coffee system, microwave oven, toaster, and refrigerator and the stairway to the apartment above. Although an easy drive to Washington, D.C., Baltimore, BWI airport, and Annapolis, you’ll feel a world away. Our location is ideal for those that want city access but to also want to feel “away from it all.” Come and enjoy this welcome respite to refresh the soul for singles, couples, families, or traveling equestrians. Note: the guesthouse is not handicap accessible. You access the flat via a long stairway so we don't recommend booking here if you have mobility issues. You reach the guest house by driving up the hill (don’t worry, it’s paved!), past the main house to enter our private gravel road to the left of the house. You continue along that road to the back of the house/pool and park right next to the gate to the Guest House. You enter the gate to get to the guest house, which is a very short walk. We will provide the entry access code to you the day before your arrival. We live in the main house year round along with our dog Belle, and are generally available if needed. We enjoy meeting our guests and are happy to make suggestions about dining or other needs during your stay. But, if peace and solitude is what you seek, you couldn’t make a better choice. Our home is perched on a wooded hillside in a rural community of farms and horse barns. We are a short hike of Schooley Mill Park and a short drive to Patuxent Branch Trail. Highland has strong agrarian roots that trace back to the 1700s, and remains a showcase of family farms. If you are traveling with your horse, let us know, and we can recommend overnight boarding options nearby. Nearby, there is a well stocked local market, Boarman's Old Fashioned Country Meat & Grocery, and very good restaurants within a 5 minute drive. We highly recommend the Highland Local, which is dog friendly. If you're into vegan fare, we recommend the Great Sage - Organic Green Cuisine. And if during your visit you need a good laundry service, we highly recommend the Highland Cleaners for dry cleaning laundry services. Getting to and around Highland takes wheels - this is the country after all! Although Uber and Lyft both service Highland, we recommend you drive yourself to save money. Popular nearby destinations: •BWI airport (30 min drive): MD 108 W towards Clarksville, then MD 32 E to 295 N •Downtown Baltimore (40 min drive): MD108 W towards Clarksville, then 32 E to I-95N to I-395 to Baltimore •Washington Union Station (65 min drive): MD108 W towards Clarksville, then I-95S towards Washington, DC •New Carrollton Metro Station (40 min drive): MD108 W towards Clarksville, then MD-32E to I-95S to I495E to New Carrollton *Laurel MARC Train Station (20 min drive): MD108 W to 216 heading east to Laurel Main St. We have many delightful features but the guesthouse doesn't have a washer and dryer, nor a full kitchen. The bathroom is downstairs off of the patio, so you'll be taking the stairs to use it. Also we have dogs who occasionally bark at a squirrel or passing deer. During hunting season, you may hear an occasional gun shot or two -- but don't worry, the local hunters are careful and they're not on the property. We are pet friendly, but prefer our guests only bring one dog. We would consider a second dog on a case-by-case basis. We charge a $10 pet fee and provide clean up bags. Finally, during swim season if you wish to use our swimming pool we require you to sign a liability release form.
