Laboe The idyllic Baltic Sea resort of Laboe (approx. 5500 inhabitants) is picturesquely located at the exit of the Kiel Fjord on the eastern shore. The former fishing village has developed into a popular holiday and seaside resort. Laboe is an old place and was first mentioned in 1240. The name Laboe derives from the Slavic "Lubodne", which means "Swan place". And even today, the swan is the heraldic animal of Laboe. The long, fine sandy beach slopes very flat to the fjord, so it is particularly recommended for families with small children. The adventure pool is located directly on the beach promenade. With the Kiel Fjord, one of the busiest waterways in the world, at your doorstep, "beach life" offers a special attraction for "sightseers" who can extensively observe the passing ships. The panorama of Laboe is clearly dominated by the world-famous 85 m high marine memorial. This memorial commemorates the fate of all those who have remained at sea and is intended to call for peaceful seafaring on the high seas. From above, the visitor has a beautiful view over the fjord and the Baltic Sea in clear weather. At the foot of the memorial, the submarine u 995 has been located as a technical museum for several years. The movie "Das Boot" takes place on a submarine, which, like u 995, belongs to the famous class vii c. A visit to the U995 offers an impressive insight into the indescribable confinement in which the submarine men had to live for months.
