Splashy Fen Mtingu Camp
Description
Splashy Fen Mtingu camp is a quirky and rustic cabin with beds and campsite located in a secluded area at the top of the festival site on Splashy Fen Farm. If you’re looking for peace and solitude and you’d like a camping experience without the thousands of festival goers then this is the place. You will have exclusive use of the camp. The space The self contained area is fenced off with wattle saplings and has panoramic views of the surrounding farmland, presided over by Bamboo Mountain. The site comprises a log cabin which is open on one side with 4 single beds in two rooms. Sheets and pillows are supplied and roller blinds can be lowered for privacy in the bedrooms. In addition there is space to pitch several tents, allowing up to 12 people in total to sleep at Mtingu Camp. Hot water for the open air shower is supplied by a wood burning easily operated ‘donkey’ boiler and a separate long drop/dry toilet and basin with cold running water. Please note that soap and toilet paper is NOT supplied. You also do need to bring all your own utensils, crockery and cooking equipment. Please also note that we supply one load of wood and then further wood is available for purchase at R60 a bag. There are also rustic work surfaces, benches, a sink, shelving and cold running water in the cabin. Hot water can be carried from the shower, which has a tap to fill a supplied bucket. The floor of the log cabin is covered with wood chips and therefore no open flame is allowed in this area. At the front of the cabin there is an extension with a roof, benches and a bare floor. In front of the cabin is a large outside fire pit with logs for sitting on. We have tried to make the camp as eco friendly as possible. Most of the wood used comes from a sustainable source or is reclaimed and the water is fed from a crystal clear stream up in the hills. There is no electricity but 4 rechargeable globes/light bulbs are supplied for the log cabin and they last for around 4 hours per change. There is a hammock to sling up and take your book into. We are pet friendly but we do not allow more than 2 dogs at a time. Guest access The Umzimude river which runs through the farm is heavenly for swimming in and picnicking next to and can be accessed on foot or vehicle from the camp. In the evenings, listen out for the howl of the jackals and the whistle of the reedbuck. We are right next to the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg park where fantastic hiking trails can be accessed. Sani Pass is well worth a trip and there are a number of operators in Underberg and Himeville who will organise this for you should you not have a 4x4, which is required to drive up the pass. There are several restaurants in the area as well cycling, horse riding trails and river adventure guides. Other things to note The farm is 18km from Underberg, mainly on a dirt road. Mtingu Camp is a further 3km on a dirt track. Access is possible in a normal car with care but a high clearance vehicle is strongly advised . To reach the farm, one has to drive on a dirt road for a distance of approximately 12km and this road is mostly in bad condition with potholes and rocky patches. Mtingu camp is then set at the end of a dirt track. It can be accessed in a normal car, slowly and with care but a high clearance vehicle is strongly advised . The risk of fire is of huge consideration. Please take care that all fires are put out when you are finished with them and supervise children at all times, especially round open fires. All pets (no more than 2 dogs) must be controlled and not allowed to wander or chase livestock and wild animals. There is no wi-fi but phone reception is generally very good from the nearby Vodacom transmitter. Tents are not supplied but bedding for the 4 single beds and a hammock is.
