Kai House, Kiwayu Island, Lamu Archipelago Kenya.
Kai House is set on the Idyllic Island of Kiwayu within the Kiunga Marine Reserve. Kiwayu Island is part of the Lamu Archipelago. Kai House began when I worked at Mikes Camp for many years and together with the island community we built this house traditional style out of palm fronds and coconut leaves mangroves and driftwood. Now we have been hosting guests here for 6years. It’s in the most idyllic setting The full name Maja Kai means Water Village. Comfortable affordable accommodation You will have the whole house to yourself at the going rate. Which consists of the big house & bathroom, the loft room and Bathroom and The top Banda with bathroom and separate dining area. You will have the space of little beach below the house which on a higher tide is a sheltered swim area. You’ll have the beachfront a 5minut walk across the island with the new built beach hut for shade and 14km of beach front to explore. If your a smaller group and wish to take a single banda with bathroom and the spare loft room & bathroom we can offer that at a special rate for up to 6px. If it’s a group of two to 4 we can give one Banda at a better rate. So just ask for the special offer. If you do this there could be shared common spaces as another Banda can be rented out at the same time. The kitchen which is adjacent to all buildings is a common shared space as well as the beaches, paths, outside sitting areas and the beach hut. There are two separate dining areas so if you have the whole place to yourself can choose the breeze under the trees looking at the ocean or the sheltered side above the creek. You can access the creek beach from the house down the star path under the Tamarind trees. The boat is mores off the beach in the creek below the house. The access to the main ocean beach is down our selected path with plenty trees for shade cover. You can hire our boat or the community Dhow to access the outer reef and other islands and beaches. Feel free to pop over to mikes camp bar next door. We have water sports equipment which is available for use. But suggest bringing your own until we get a better collection but we have kayaks and some masks and flippers, fishing equipment, a ski rope found on the beach and a kite board that we use to wakeboard… and will be stocking up. Other option would be to rent from mikes camp if available. We have a brilliant team who will host your stay on the ground if we are away. Tima is our manager and chef. Mwana Joa, Badi & Bwana caretake the house cleaning etc and Abu captains the boat and helps to guide. All staff are Swahaili and English speaking island locals . There are times when we are here for months as a family in a neighboring Banda or camping in the hills, our on a dhow and we will be around to assist with anything activity ideas, knowledge on what’s good to do when and will leave you to your privacy too. The staff are pretty knowledgeable on this too and you’ll be asked the evening before about next day plans and guided through what’s on offer as well as meal plans etc. Often when it’s busy here we have to be elsewhere doing full board hosted stays at Tassia or on safari. Otherwise we also offer full board hosted stays here at Kai House Kiwayu and you can contact us for further info on that. With deep sea fishing, scenic flights catered for with guided ocean and island ventures. Kai House is close to nature! Close to the ocean and has a bit of wilderness on the door step. You have neighbors also which is wonderful Mikes camp is a 10minute walk away and Chandani village is 15minute walk away. I love being here because everything is so easily accessible ocean wise, the sightings of birds fish and sea mammals as well as land mammals are magnificent this place is truly pristine and what’s more beautiful is that that is valued by us all who visit. Kai House is within the Kiunga Marine Reserve and you can be charged an extra US$15.00 per international guest per day, residents and citz is far cheaper. Bring little and leave no trace. Don’t pick up live shells, eat what you catch and only buy Grade A crab. You’ll probably arrive in Lamu at Manda airstrip, Shela or Lamu town. From there we offer our boat to transfer you to Kiwayu it’s a 2hour ride in our 23ft Yamaha canoe with an eco friendly 4stroke 70 horse power engine and Abu at the Helm. We provide life jackets for safety and there are bench seats with cushions and a compound for shade as well as a hammock for kids and good life jackets for children too. We have all licenses needed. We charge Otherwise we can arrange a Dhow to sail up that’s 6hrs but on a morning or evening tide with some moonlight it’s totally worth it, with the wind behind you. You will be served a meal on the Dhow and have cushions and shade for comfort. This costs from US$300.00 one way to US$200.00 depending on who’s Dhow. On the Island everything is a short walk away, remember your flip flops as the sand gets hot. There are no cars but the odd motorbike on the island and plenty of donkeys if you need to catch a lift. To access the outer ocean and other islands and villages we hire out our boat again. We do this for US$35.00 per hour and double that for full throttle journeys or activities such as waterskiing. We keep fuel stocked at the house. We also have 2 kayaks to get around the creek with with rod holders, remember to travel with the Tide. You can download tide apps and set for Kiunga or Lamu and that will let you know what the idea are doing so you can follow the tides to the activities that each different tide offers. There’s a write up at the house on these. Kiwayu islanders are possibly the nicest community of people I’ve ever met I’ve lived here for over ten years and I hope they are always respected because they respect you and value you being here. Kiwayu community is Muslim but they are used to people walking on the beach in bikinis and drinking alcohol although it is custom to dress moderate and not to touch alcohol. So I ask that you deal with your own drinks and dress well if you visit the villages otherwise just be you. We are all friends with different cultures. try experience a bit of culture while you are here. Visit a village. Swahili food is the best and you will be fed well for sure at Kai House. On another note we have contacts for police they are based on the island so there is security in the area. There is no theft ever this is one place you can leave your things on the beach and swim and know that the only thing that could move them will be a crab or the tide. But please be conscious of your valuables. We have a lock box if you need for anything locked away.
