Other things to note Bad Salzuflen, the traditional spa resort, is situated in the heart of Germany near the Teutoburg Forest, in a marvellous woody and hilly landscape. The town, famous for its abundance of medicinal salt water springs, has the air and water reminiscent of the seaside. Bad Salzuflen has lots to offer, such as invigorating health programmes, cultural delights and diversified sport and leisure activities. Salt and brine The name Bad Salzuflen comes from the nature of the region: for many centuries saline springs deep under the earth’s surface have offered the prospect of salt extraction. Until the middle of the 19th century salt had been the most important source of revenue for the town. As early as 1767 the Baron of Beust built the first graduation house with the goal of increasing the salt content of the brine. By repeatedly trickling the brine over the wooden columns filled with blackthorn bundles, the amount of salt collected could be significantly increased. Until 1945 the Salzuflen graduation houses were used for salt extraction; today they serve as an enormous open-air inhalation facility, talking a fresh seaside-like breeze up to the centre of the city. Up to 600,000 litres of brine trickle daily over the giant blackthorn walls, creating a healthy climate all year long, just like at the seaside. Lively Old Town Bad Salzuflen combines the air of the past with the liveliness of the present. The historic Old Town will impress you with its sumptuous patrician houses and the artfully decorated half-timbered houses. Here, you can wander and linger in the picturesque lanes and dreamy corners.Allow yourself a rest on one of the numerous benches.Discover the small boutiques and the stylish shops, and enjoy the special atmosphere of the Old Town by having a cappuccino in one of the many cafés. A little paradise In the spa garden and the natural park you will find a true island of serenity. Lose yourself in your thoughts, and stock up on strength – a wonderful parkland of 120 hectares invites you to go for long walks and hikes. In spring a real ocean of flowering plants submerge the parks in pastel colours, while colourful shrub beds contrast with the lovely green of the parks during the warm summer months. In autumn the foliage shines in the most beautiful colours, and in winter you can admire blossoming witch hazels – the spa garden and the park offer a very special natural experience in every season. However, there is still a lot more to discover: taste the medicinal Salzuflen brine at the water post fountain in the pump room, and visit the Leopold spring, which is the favourite motif of photographers in this town. Passing the Kneipp basin barefoot, you come to the spa garden lake, where you can take one of the boats for a paddle. Health and wellness Bad Salzuflen looks back on an almost 200-year spa tradition, with the first spa season opening in 1818. In 1914 the town was given the designation of “spa town”. Just as in those days, the healing power of the brine is still the focal point of a multitude of health treatments. Each of the nine salt springs is unique, and tailored individually to promote health: for taking baths, breathing or drinking. Indulge yourself with a break from everyday life, and enjoy the varied health and wellness offers. You can also visit the VitaSol hot springs.Take a bath in the warm brine, which flows from its own spring at temperatures of up to 35°C, and relax in the spacious SaunaPark. Active leisure time Bad Salzuflen’s green surroundings offer you a lot to see and discover. In Bad Salzuflen you will have fun when planning your leisure time in the varied landscape around the town, be it on foot,by bike or in a carriage. Here, movement belongs to the philosophy of life: golfing, canoeing,Nordic walking, cycling, horse riding, rowing, swimming, dancing, tennis or hiking – the list is endless!
