Guest access Malaxa is a small village on an elevated plateau on the feet of the White Mountains of Crete. It is located south of the village (and the harbor) of Souda, at a distance of 8 km from Chania city. Malaxa consists of a number of scattered houses, some of which have been masterfully renovated, and some villas that were built during recent years. What makes Malaxa stand out is its magnificent view over Souda bay. The village is also known for its traditional taverns with Cretan dishes. The strategic location of Malaxa is evident through the history of the village. During the Greek revolution of 1821 against the Ottomans, the place was a stronghold of the revolutionaries. Later, at around 1860, the Ottomans built here the Malaxa Tower, to defend the area. Finally, during the Battle of Crete, Malaxa was the place where fierce battles took place between the German paratroopers and the Greek and allied forces. All these conflicts that took place in the area, however, seem like passing shadows of the distant past, as Malaxa is today one of the most peaceful villages you will come across.
