Underneath the Arches is an ideal base for a visit to Edinburgh, The Borders and the southeast of Scotland. The space Penicuik was historically well known for its paper mills. The apartment is in Park End a building designed by architect Thomas Frederick Pilkerton in 1862. It became known as the Nunnery, as it was used to house young female employees of the mills, and is a building of historic interest. Other things to note Parkend is between 22 and 28 Bridge Street. The top of the arch is carved ‘Parkend’ but it is not obvious. Number 3 is through the second arch.
