Description

Hand built by myself & Granny Mongolia, the Yurt is a mix of traditional Mongolian design & bohemian chic. As you enter the yurt you will instantly notice a sense of calm & grounding, an ideal retreat from a hectic lifestyle. Surrounded by countryside, the yurt is home to many Mongolian artefacts gifted to me by Granny Mongolia. It features a charcoal bbq & stove. Outside there is a large dining area, outdoor kitchen & outdoor bathroom. Child friendly space. As seen on BBC2 My Unique B&B. The space The Yurt is ideal for people who love being outdoors and long for a strong connection with nature. The interior is a mixture of traditional Mongolian & bohemian chic with bold colours and treasures from Mongolia. Built by myself & Granny Mongolia during the covid-years. Originally from Mongolia, Granny Mongolia shared stories of tradition & ceremony in Mongolia and I was fascinated. Then one day, I said to her ‘we should build a Yurt whilst you are here!’. And we did. Once built, Granny Mongolia held an opening ceremony, with family (hers & mine) with Mongolian rituals, blessings and traditional food & drink (including horse milk!). Since then we have become firm friends & she visits sometimes with her grandchildren, always bring a gift from her homeland. Talking of tradition, it is customary to enter the Yurt with your right foot first, without treading on the threshold. Just incase you choose to visit. The Yurt is one large, round 6m space with a comfy king size bed & traditional style floor mats for children to sleep on. A travel cot & high chair are available upon request. Unlike some traditional Mongolian Yurts, our Yurt has soft cotton bedding & towels, cosy blankets and cushions. Soft lighting and a heated blanket is available for the winter months. The Yurt has electrical power points for lighting and charging of devices. One small, well behaved dog is welcome in the Yurt. Please remember to add a ‘pet’ to your booking if you are planning to bring your furry friend. Please note that we share our land with pheasants and wild deer, therefore it is advisable to keep your dog close by at all times. I would urge you to only footprints in the South Downs National Park, bin dog poo & litter, thank you. There’s lots of child friendly outdoor space to explore and enjoy including one acre of walled garden, with a chicken coop (children & adults can book in advance to feed the chickens and hopefully, collect some eggs). Being this close to nature you’ll wake up to a chorus of birdsong & sleep under the dark skies of the South Downs National Park. The outside space features a large, covered dining room with a faux antler chandelier and many treasures dug up from the earth here at Garden House Sussex including beautiful earthenware vessels and old glass bottles & pots. Recently shown on BBC2 My Unique B&B, series 2, episode 15/15 as inspiration for Rebecca’s & Ralph’s Bender. Watch on BBC iPlayer (start 10 minutes into the 29 minute programme to see the Yurt in its full glory). We are surrounded by beautiful country pubs & restaurants, many with stunning views across the South Downs or, if you don’t fancy that, the yurt has a well equipped covered outdoor kitchen which will allow you to cook up a storm should you choose - with a 4 ring gas hob, butler sink, crockery, cutlery, pans. electric kettle, fridge & charcoal egg-style bbq which can also be used as an oven. There is a fire pit area too for cosy nights outside in warmer weather. Try cooking marshmallows over the fire. The quirky covered outdoor bathroom with hot shower & eco-friendly, waterless composting toilet is a feature in its self. My youngest son had great fun making the toilet-humour signs displayed on the wall. Ideal for couples looking for a romantic getaway with a difference or a weekend retreat, away from this hectic, uncertain world we find ourselves in. Similarly, the yurt is a magical place for a family to stay with young children. It’s the camping box ticked but, with modern luxuries, no hassle, gorgeous surroundings where the children can run freely & play. Guest access Guests can enjoy all aspects of the yurt, including it’s private outdoor dining room, kitchen & bathroom. The yurt is set in one acre of walled garden (with free range hens), surrounded by historic woodland & close to Lords Piece, Coates Common SSSI. Other things to note If Mongolian tradition would have you enter the Yurt with your right foot first (to avoid bad luck), avoiding stepping on the threshold - as this represents the owners throat! Please note, the decking around the Yurt can sometimes be slippery due to weather conditions & proximity to trees. Please take care on the decking especially in Autumn and when the outside temperature is 5 degrees or less thank you. Occasionally, in really cold weather (0 degrees and below) the water pipes may freeze. If this happens, we may ask you to reschedule your booking with us. There is no WiFi at the Yurt. Please check with your mobile phone provider for coverage at postcode RH20 1EU. If you require a taxi or, wish to dine out it’s always best to pre book as we are fairly rural. There are recommendations for taxis, pubs, restaurants & excursions within the Guestbook or, please ask. We don’t allow any vehicles access to the walled garden/yurt itself please (includes pick up & drop off). You can park alongside the outer wall of the walled garden on the hard standing/gravelled area - it’s not far from here. Please feel free to bring your own wood and fire supplies for the indoor log burning stove, outdoor fire pit & either wood or charcoal is best for the egg-style bbq. Our closest shop is Fittleworth Stores in School Lane, Fittleworth. They do great coffee and offer a good breakfast/brunch. There is a Tesco & a Sainsburys in Pulborough, Waitrose in Storrington & Chichester & a Co-op in Petworth. Logs and fire supplies are usually available from Elite Garage in Pulborough. Follow us ‘Garden House Sussex’ on social media.
