Charming Tudor riverside house

Description

Wivenhoe is an undiscovered gem on the Essex/ Suffolk boarder, a sailing town full of artists and eccentrics! It is a great mix of tranquil riverside charm and holiday buzz, with plenty of great little restaurants, pubs and shops. The house is Tudor, built 1580. Lovingly restored and very cozy! The space The house was originally built in 1580, and has been a pub and a haberdashers in its past lives! It spreads over 4 floors, with a large open-plan kitchen with dining table and couch area, opening onto a patio garden full of climbing plants and outdoor seating- it's a real sun trap in the summer. On the ground floor is a very large open plan living room, with a wood burner to cosy up too, and stacks of games and books to entertain you. The view down to the river is lovely, and patio doors open onto a glass terrace from which you can watch the sun set on the water, perfect for a gin and tonic! This room is full of soft velvet couches and old heavy roof beams. The beautiful wooden staircase is a great feature. Off this room, is a double bedroom with a small toilet ensuite, it has a working fireplace and again all old original wooden beams- full of Tudor character! It's very useful if you have someone with you for whom stairs are difficult- they're close to the action with toilet en-suite . Climb up the staircase and on either side are galleries, used by my children as play areas for drawing up and hiding- putting on shows and any other fantastic plans they devise with their friends- this house is a child's paradise! This first floor has the main bathroom and the master bedroom and en-suite. Up the next flight of stairs and you have two more rooms; the children’s bedroom, with two full size single beds. Perfectly comfy for adults but there’s only a curtain for privacy, as the door was removed. Also the 4th bedroom, a double bedroom with low ceiling heights. PARKING We do not have designated parking with the house. We use the street which is feee except Mon-fri 7.45-8.45 am. Weekdays we recommend parking in the communal parking lot opposite The Greyhound pub in the high st. This is max 3 mins walk from the house. You can park here all the time, even though a sign says 4 hours max. That’s a suggestion and the car park is unmonitored and there is no fine. We’ve been parking there for 8 years now and never a problem! WITHOUT A CAR Wivenhoe has its own train station, 4 mins walk to the house, and 2 trains an hour to Liverpool St. journey takes about 65/70 mins. On the doorstep there are several walks- along the river both directions, and a large woods to explore. Defiantly enough for a weekend so you can go car-less, which is wonderfully relaxing. Trains also link onto Walton where there’s a beach. And Colchester if you want a city to explore. Bikes can be hired and there are cycle paths for miles along the river. WITH A CAR Visit Hadleigh, Sulfolk for a pretty Tudor village with a riverside walk and eat at the excellent "The Ram". Drive to Dedham, right in the heart of Constable county. Beautiful riverside town, with outstanding food and very child/dog friendly garden at "The Sun Inn" or eat at "The Boathouse" (book if possible and go rowing after! Or catch the river cruise to Flatford and back (summer only). Flatford- a beautiful riverside village, in the depths of Constable country. National trust cafe- excellent by he river bank and a wonderful nature garden where the RSPB run daily activities for children, esp in summer. Marks Hall and arboretum, north of Coggeshall- a very picturesque village with West St vineyard worth a visit for lunch and fine local wine ! Saffron Waldon Clapton pier, for old style funfair and amusements by a lovely sandy beach, and more teenage rides on the pier. Frinton, for very quaint and quintessentially English sea promenade, beach huts and cream teas in an old world atmosphere. From london it's a 70 minute direct train from Liverpool St Station. Trains go twice every hour, check timetables. From Wivenhoe you can catch a bus direct to Colchester, where you can catch a bus on to standsted airport. Lots and lots to do! Guest access You will have the whole house to yourselves. Other things to note This is our family home and is really only suited to family groups, or people with previous good reviews. We won’t be here, you do have the whole house to yourselves, but we do have some clothes here, and personal items. It’s not a sterile professional holiday let. Also, our neighbours are our friends, so absolutely no parties/ extra guests please!
