With a wingspan of up to two meters, it is a fantastic sight when it plunges into the dish. Killer whale safari runs only in winter, from October to December. About 2 and 1/2 hours drive from Flakstad, is Polarlightcenter Lofoten. Here you get information about the background to this phenomenon. They also warn of Northern Lights activities days in advance. It is not every day you can see the northern lights, either due to low activity or low cloud cover. But, - Lofoten has a lot of mountains, and sometimes a lot of weather. The same mountains also help to break up the cloud cover, and create gaps in the cloud cover where you can experience the northern lights, even when it is cloudy. Facts about the Northern Lights The Northern Lights occur when particles from the sun hit the Earth's atmosphere. The sun throws out huge gas clouds (solar wind) of varying strength. When the particles meet the earth's magnetic field, they are directed towards a circle around the magnetic North Pole, and it is the energy that is released that is the Northern Lights. Heavy activity on the sun can lead to the northern lights three to four days later.
