To the north of Agenais on the Périgord border, Count Alphonse de Poitiers, brother of Saint-Louis, founded the bastide of Villeréal in 1265, built in just 4 years. It adopted, like all new towns in the region in the Middle Ages, a checkerboard plan. Noteworthy are its large central square where there is a hall of vast proportions with, extremely rare, a cob floor, and its fortified church, set back from the center dedicated to commerce. Classified as a Historic Monument since 2007 , it is probably one of the most beautiful halls in France. This is where a market has been held since 1305, also considered one of the most beautiful in France! Villeréal, “city of the king” of France which imposed its right here against the English of Aquitaine, still displays its medieval buildings today: half-timbered houses, corbelled houses, old-fashioned walled gardens. Classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, the bastide is very much alive and hosts numerous events, markets as well as exhibitions, flea markets, concerts, bodega, horse races etc.
