The surrounding landscape is rustic high desert—mostly dirt, native vegetation, mature trees, big skies and views of the Book Cliffs rather than manicured lawns. You’ll also share the property with some of our more unusual residents: wild turkeys, peacocks and chickens regularly wander the grounds. A Real Utah Ghost Town The Blue Moon sits on the 11-acre grounds of the historic Desert Moon, a 1936 boarding house turned artistic desert stay, RV park and campground in the ghost town of Thompson Springs. The Desert Moon once welcomed miners, railroad workers, travelers and wanderers passing through this bustling Western town. The old Cactus Cabaret nearby remains a colorful piece of Thompson Springs history, recalling the town’s days as a railroad stop and gathering place. Today, Thompson Springs is much quieter, but remnants of its railroad and mining history are still all around you. The Desert Moon remains a little wild, a little weird and full of character. Trains & Desert Sounds The Union Pacific Railroad still runs through Thompson Springs, adding to the atmosphere of staying in an old Western railroad town. Unlike the main inn, which sits closer to the railroad, the Blue Moon is set farther back on the property, approximately an acre from the tracks. Trains pass during the day and night. Many guests enjoy them as part of the ghost-town experience, but particularly light sleepers may still notice them. We provide complimentary earplugs, and the bus has a fan that can be used for background noise. Guest access Guest access Guests have private access to the entire Blue Moon Caravan and its immediate outdoor area, including the fire pit and picnic table. All other buildings and areas of the property are private unless specifically identified as available to guests. There are two steps up into the bus. Other things to note The Blue Moon is an unconventional desert stay rather than a traditional hotel room. The bus is comfortable and thoughtfully converted, but you’re still staying on a rustic high-desert property. Expect dirt, changing desert weather, occasional insects and wildlife, passing trains, wandering birds, other travelers and the quirks that come with staying somewhere unusual. Peacocks, chickens, wild turkeys and other animals may be present, so please keep dogs safely separated from them. Food & Supplies Thompson Springs is a tiny ghost town with very limited services. We strongly recommend picking up groceries, drinks and other necessities in Moab or Green River before arriving. A 7-Eleven approximately one mile away offers pizza and a small selection of basic items. The Golden Gate is approximately five miles away and has additional convenience-store items and Krispy Krunchy Chicken fast food. Settle into a baby-blue caravan among the trees, watch peacocks wander past, enjoy lanterns glowing after dark and gather around your private fire beneath the desert sky. Then wake up in a nearly forgotten Western town with the Book Cliffs on the horizon—welcome to the Blue Moon.
