Description
Characterful terraced house, over one hundred years old, on top of a steep hill overlooking the cathedral and castle. 10-15 min walking distance to city centre, bus and railway stations, 5 min walk to supermarket. Free, but limited, on-street parking. This is a unique place. It is very quiet, because we are surrounded by gardens, the school playing field and the woods (the local nature reserve). We have seen deer, foxes, badgers and woodpeckers, but we are actually within Durham City!! The space This is a beautiful old terraced cottage, built over one hundred years ago for workers on the steam railway. It comfortably sleeps 4, but there is a double mattress under the double bed which can be pulled out if you need more sleeping space, and the sofa downstairs is also long enough to sleep on should the need arise! We have done everything we can to make the house both characterful and cosy. The main bedroom has views over Durham towards the cathedral (which you can see if the trees aren't in leaf). Please don't come if you want everything to be brand new and modern, do come if you like having lots of old books around you, a comfy bed, a peaceful place to relax or work, and beautiful gardens around you. There is even a piano if you want to play and a stash of old National Geographic magazines if you like that sort of thing! There is also a board games cupboard and a few toys and DVDs for young children. We live two doors down with our 3 children, if you need anything else. Guest access The whole house, the little seating area outside. You can even come and sit by our pond if you want to relax or work there. Disabled or elderly guests can use the chair lift and there is a ramp in the back yard for those with wheelchairs or pushchairs. The downstairs floor is made of slate which makes it easier to use a wheelchair. Other things to note We live at the top of a very steep hill (so steep you can only drive up it, not down!) It takes about 10 min to walk down it into town, to the railway station or the bus station. Or you can walk about 5 min to get to the nearest mini-supermarket. If you don't like hills or can't walk up them, you can use your car... there is free on-road parking and you can usually find a space within 100 metres of the house, on Redhills Lane (please don't park on Grays Terrace itself). INTERNET CONNECTION HAS RECENTLY BEEN UPDATED, SO PLEASE IGNORE PREVIOUS COMMENTS ABOUT WI FI SIGNAL BEING WEAK.
