Magical Treehouse/Cabin hidden in Ancient Woodland

Description

Welcome to Treetop Lodge, a magical escape set within 10 acres of ancient woodland, the last vestige of an ancient deer park hunted by King John on the edge of the Surrey Hills. Stay surrounded by trees in every direction, warmed by a roaring fire as wildlife passes your windows. Explore the rich and diverse wildlife inc deer, birds and insects. The site forms part of Churchill’s WWII GHQ line from Bristol to London, with historic pillboxes, including one forming the lodge’s unique foundation. The space The space provides a cosy, retreat whilst allowing you to watch nature from the comfort of your bed! To help people switch off WiFi is not available within the cabin, although there are good cellular data feeds available and high-speed internet is accessible closer to the main house/car park via an external WiFi spot. The main room provides a woodburner for heating and cooking, a clothes rail, two bedside drawers, lights, a 42" flatscreen TV connected to a blu-ray/DVD player (note there is no access to standard TV channels, a Amazon Fire TV Stick (note you'll have to provide internet access via a mobile connection), (also we have a wide range of Blu-Ray/DVD's available at the main house if you would like to watch something), a small fridge, air fryer, microwave, toaster, and double induction hob and you can also cook using an oven compartment in the wood burner, as well as with a frying pan, pot or kettle on the top of the woodburner, which provide basic cooking/food capability. The primary living space and kitchenette doesn't have a sink, so a plastic bowl is used for this function with hot/cold water available just a few steps away. Fairy-lights are threaded throughout the beams and roof space. The spot provides a lovely space to switch off, relax and enjoy the natural environment. It is well insulated and surrounded by trees so in winter it warms easily through the use of the woodburner once up to temperature and in summer it is naturally very cool so air conditioning is not needed. Note - Access to the property is via a 150m route over a steep uneven grass hillside. This property is NOT suitable for people with mobility problems. If you have any questions regarding access please contact us via an enquiry in advance before booking. There is a basic outside bbq, picnic table and tools inside. You will need to bring coal/lighting fuel. Please be careful not to start a fire when disposing of embers. For tree, bird and nature lovers, the 10-acre grounds at Heath Hill offer a rare opportunity to experience one of the last substantial surviving fragments of the medieval Old Park of Farnham, the ancient hunting landscape associated with the Bishops of Winchester and visited by King John. The heart of the estate is its ancient woodland, where veteran English oaks (Quercus robur), sweet chestnuts, hornbeams, birches, hazel, yew and mature beeches form a richly layered canopy developed over centuries. Gnarled trunks, hollow limbs and standing deadwood support a wealth of fungi, lichens, mosses and invertebrates, while cavities and loose bark provide roosting sites for bats including common pipistrelles and brown long-eared bats. In spring, the woodland floor is carpeted with bluebells, wood anemones, dog’s mercury and primroses, creating one of Surrey’s most striking seasonal displays. The woodland supports a rich assemblage of mammals, with badgers regularly foraging at dusk and roe/muntjac deer moving quietly through trees and glades throughout the day and night. Foxes are frequently seen, while grey squirrels are abundant in the canopy and small mammals occupy the understorey and grassland edges. Occasional sightings of weasels and other small predators add to the sense of a functioning, balanced ecosystem. Birdlife is especially diverse and ever-present. Nuthatches and treecreepers work the mature oaks, while great spotted and green woodpeckers are a constant feature of the woodland soundscape. Common garden and woodland birds such as blackbirds, song thrushes, robins, wrens, dunnocks and blackcaps are widespread, joined seasonally by chiffchaffs and other summer migrants. Goldcrests, coal tits, great tits, blue tits, chaffinches, bullfinches, linnets, pigeons, pheasants, jays, magpie and crows are all regularly recorded, with firecrests present in denser evergreen areas and little owls occasionally seen at dusk. Overhead, buzzards and red kites are a daily presence, soaring above the grounds, while kestrels hover over open grassland and tawny owls inhabit the older woodland, adding to the rich nocturnal wildlife. The mature ornamental gardens provide a vivid contrast to the ancient woodland. Extensive rhododendrons and azaleas create a colourful spring understorey, offering shelter and nesting cover for a range of birds. Goldcrests and firecrests forage within the dense foliage, while blackcaps, chiffchaffs and other summer migrants breed in the sheltered garden habitats. The varied structure of shrubs, lawns and specimen trees creates a diverse mosaic of feeding and nesting opportunities throughout the year. Beyond the woodland, meadow areas support a highly active invertebrate community. Native grasses and wildflowers attract large numbers of bees, hoverflies, dragonflies, butterflies and moths, with common species including meadow brown, gatekeeper, speckled wood, holly blue, whites, brimstone and comma. Grasshoppers and crickets thrive in sunny clearings, while slow worms, grass snakes and common lizards may be seen basking in warm, sheltered spots. Together, the ancient woodland, meadow and mature gardens form a richly varied and dynamic landscape where centuries of history and ecology remain closely intertwined, offering a rare and authentic glimpse of a historic Surrey woodland ecosystem supporting exceptional biodiversity. Guest access The treehouse/lodge is located in 10 acres of private grounds and woodland that you are welcome to explore. Around the treehouse are woodland trails and a bench to sit and enjoy the location. This is a rural location, with access is via a steep grass covered hillside with little lighting, so good movement and fitness is needed, there is uneven ground and care should be taken, with the use of a torch best at night. The car park is situated approx 150m away, therefore you might want to minimise trips/have luggage that can be transported easily across grassland. PLEASE do not book this listing if you have reduced mobility, if you require additional information please contact us via the enquiry option. Other things to note The treehouse has mains electricity and water. Due to the isolation of the treehouse and the length of electricity cable to supply the property you will need to be careful not to utilise too many high voltage items at the same time e.g. microwave, air fryer, bathroom heater or bathroom hot water. There will be wood, kindling, paper and lighter supplied for the use of the Woodburner and the top part of this can be used as a small oven for heating food, alongside the top surface works as a hob. There is a cold water tap on the right hand side of the outside as you go up the stairs. There is excellent 5G/4G coverage for the Vodafone network, I do not know for others. WiFi access is available only via an external WiFI hotspot near the main house/car park. Primary lighting is via three sets of fairy lights entwined around the beams of the structure. These are controlled via a multi-socket extension and may be switched on/off on either the wall socket or individually on the switches on the extension or the individual control boxes. The bathroom is separate from the main cabin space and accessed down a short set of external stairs, but comes with a shower, W/C, basin and radiator. Hot water is provided by a hot water tank on a timer (don't expect a power shower I'm afraid). October to March - We provide a basket of logs and 1/4 bag of kindling per day. April to September - We provide 1/2 a basket of logs and 1/8 a bag of kindling per day. Additional wood and kindling can be purchased at a cost of £15 per basket of wood and £8 per bag of kindling.
