THE LOCAL AREA: Cirencester is often referred to as the ‘Capital of the Cotswolds’ and was the second largest town in Britain during Roman times. In later years it became a very prosperous medieval wool town and today it still contains many interesting buildings with architectural styles spanning several centuries. The award winning Corinium Museum, which houses one of the largest collections of Romano-British antiquities, is only five minutes’ walk away from the house. A gentle stroll from the house brings you to the town centre, which has a pleasant mixture of independent and national shops. There are plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from or if you want to stay in and cook, there are excellent independent butchers, fishmongers and delis in Cirencester and a large Waitrose within walking distance where you can stock up on provisions. FURTHER AFIELD: Cirencester borders the eastern edge of the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The area is well known for gentle hillsides (‘wolds’), outstanding countryside with river valleys, water meadows and beech woods, sleepy ancient limestone villages, historic market towns and for being ‘typically English’. Throughout the area, the honey-coloured Cotswolds limestone features in buildings and stone walls acting as a common thread in seamlessly blending the historic towns and villages with their surrounding landscape. Offering breath-taking scenery ideal for keen walkers, the Cotswolds offers 3000 miles of public footpaths and offers one of the best kept ‘rights of way’ networks in the country. Circular routes with self-guided leaflets are also plentiful. The city of Gloucester is a short drive away, boasting a fine cathedral and the recently regenerated Gloucester Docks area.
