Description

Traditional spacious two-storey stone house of 190sq.m. in the center of the village, with all the modern amenities of a permanent residence. Close enough to beaches, restaurants and dining places. It is suitable for couples, business travelers, and families with children. The space Traditional spacious 2-level stone house, total area of 190sqm with a combination of stone and wood inside. It is located on a pedestrian street 40 meters from Pyrgi Square, and has been built with absolute respect for tradition. It also offers every modern comfort and ensures a unique experience for the visitor of the island and the village. It was renovated in 2016 for private use and not for exploitation as a rental apartment and therefore it is distinguished by the high quality of construction, and the provision of amenities that exist in a fully equipped house. The ground floor section has a single living room – kitchen, bathroom and bedroom in an interior loft. Similar spaces are included on the floor where the energy fireplace and the vaulted ceilings (cross vaults) stand out. The floor has access to the "pounti", a sunny open space of about 30 sq.m., where you can relax in the evening or early in the morning. From the "pounti" there is access to the walkable roof of the house and to a 10 sq.m. warehouse with a built-in oven inside, but also a second staircase for exit to the pedestrian street in front of the house. The floors are made of wood or tile. The frames are synthetic (pvc) in imitation wood with screens and double glazing. Heating is provided by radiators that operate either with an electric boiler or with the energy fireplace, but also with air conditioners. Cooling is provided by air conditioners. It has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, a complete and fully equipped kitchen with a variety of electrical appliances and utensils for its use, with a variety of coffee and tea, to meet your morning needs. It is extremely quiet throughout the day and night. It can accommodate up to 6 people and is ideal for a family but also for a large group. The village is hospitable and many residents speak English, making the stay even more accessible to foreign visitors. Goods from the Supermarket can be delivered at home and at no extra charge by phone, as well as coffee with sweet and savory hot or cold dishes in the morning, but also grilled, pizza or pies and souvlaki, as well as sandwiches at noon and in the evening, from the surrounding catering stores. The house has towels and several personal hygiene items. It also has 3 bicycles and an additional tricycle so you can even ride them. For children, small bicycles are available, as well as toys after consultation about age and interests, but it is best for children to play with others in the square. Don't be afraid, they won't get lost, and there's no danger. It is desirable that our little friends do not stay inside the house. There are spaces outside the main residence where pets can be accommodated, without any problem but not inside it. If you want to have your little friend with you on the trip, you need to make an additional arrangement. Guest access Pyrgi is a traditional medieval castle village, the streets are narrow and cars do not circulate in most of them. This favors peace and quiet for the residents, but makes it difficult to equip the house as well as to move to it. You need to leave your car 100 to 200 meters away from the house, but there is no problem finding a parking space. Upon your arrival on the island, after consultation, we will take you directly to the door of the house, and we will give you the necessary instructions you will need, as well as any other information you deem necessary. Other things to note Chios & Pyrgi. The Island. Chios, the 5th largest island in Greece and the 10th in the Mediterranean, is located in the Northeastern Aegean, and only 3.5 nautical miles separate it from Cape Pounta to the peninsula of Erythraia at the height of Cesme. It is also the easiest "route" between Greece and Turkey, with a daily ferry connection that does not exceed 30 minutes, since the 2 ports are very close, but it is also the only Greek island so close to the 3rd largest city in Turkey, Izmir. Myrovolos Chios, or Pityousa (from the many pines that existed) or Ophiousa (from the many snakes) or Ariousa (from the "arion", a kind of oak), is first in days of clarity and third in sunshine, but it almost always blows. It is surrounded by 91 beaches, some with facilities and others without, but all with incredibly clear waters. It has 64 villages, some of which are of unique aesthetics and well known throughout the world because of their people or their decoration such as Pyrgi, Mesta, Kardamyla, Anavatos, Volissos, Lagada, etc., with completely different architecture between them. Chios is surrounded by the sister islands of Oinousses and Psara, from where Konstantinos Kanaris, hero of the 1821 revolution for the independence of Greece, came. These three islands have the most and largest shipping families in Greece (Livanou, Chandri, Lo, Patera, Laimou, Andreadi, Patsou, Fafaliou, Tsakou, Frangou, Xyla and many others). Chios had in antiquity the First form of Democracy even before that of Solon, but also the first mint. It was also known for the wine of Northern Chios, the nectar of the gods (Ariousios Oinos) mentioned in Homer. Many personalities from the field of arts and sciences were born in Chios (Adamantios Korais, Giannis Psycharis, Georgios S2ouris, Emmanuel Roidis, Fotis Angoules, Nikos Gialouris, Stamatis Krimizis, Dimos Avdeliotis, Matthaios Mountes, Mikis Theodorakis and others. Also, Chios is the predominant birthplace of Homer as well as the mathematicians Hippocrates and Oinopides. Christopher Columbus passed through Chios and took Chian sailors and cartographers as well as maps for his explorations, and is said to have originated from the island, since many families in Pyrgi bear his surname. It has a unique fauna with rare species of some small animals and insects (dragonflies, spiders, vipers, foxes, partridges) but also flora, with 91 of the 108 orchids of Europe growing in Chios, the Lalades or tulips in South Chios to decorate the fields of central and southern Chios making them all red every March, and of course the uniqueness of the rope, the variety Pistacia or lentiscus or Chia (Pistacia lentiscus var. Chia), which is the endemic plant that produces the Chios mastic and is often referred to as the mastic tree. Also around the island there is remarkable underwater life, with diving enthusiasts distinguishing it for the beauty of its seabed, and ranking it in the top positions. Chios has many local Saints and many churches and monasteries, very well preserved in time, and with a great history, with the New Monastery standing out. Along with the Monastery of Hosios Loukas in Boeotia and the Monastery of Dafni, they are the only Byzantine monasteries that survive in Greece in good condition. The mosaics of the New Monastery are one of the three top creations of the visual arts in Greece during the Middle Ages. In 1990 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It celebrates on August 23 (performance of the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin). The artists who worked were the best of the time, and according to the architectural data, the Catholic Church of the New Monastery was built on the model of the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus of Constantinople. In Kampos, Chios, apart from the Citrus Museum, a private initiative with an amazing response, there are also 250 mansions built with thyme (local from the next village) stone. It is worth walking through its streets, where you can see the doors and a few pieces of the amazing enclosure and wealth of their time. The famous Rocket War at Easter, the night of the Resurrection between the parishes of Agios Markos and Panagia Erythiani in Vrontado, the Agio Vasilia Vaporakia made by children from metal or wood in the neighborhoods of the city on New Year's Day and the scattered festivals mainly in the summer with the culmination of the festivals on the day of August 15, make Chios friendly all seasons of the year, with amazing changes in its decoration. In Chios there are museums, where the visitor can admire exhibits that testify to the history of the island. The Archaeological Museum of Chios is located on Museum Street, about 100 meters south of the port. The Byzantine Museum of Chios is located in the central square of the city (Vounakiou Square). The museum building is an Ottoman mosque. The Palace of Justinian is a small building located at the entrance of the Castle of Chios. This is the home of the Genoese Justinian family, who ruled the island for a long time during the Middle Ages. Today it is a small medieval museum. The Museum of Nea Moni is located in the monastery of Nea Moni, in the center of the island, between the villages of Karyes and Avgonima. Nea Moni is the most famous example of Byzantine architecture of all the Aegean islands. The Maritime Museum of Chios is characterized by a strong maritime presence over the years. It is well known that even today the people of Chios own more than half of the Greek-owned fleet. The Korais Library and the Argenti Folklore Museum are housed in the same area located on Korai Street, in the center of Chios next to the Metropolis, at the end of the south side of Aplotarias Street, which is the most famous commercial street of the island. The Korais Library is one of the oldest, most important and largest libraries in Greece, the 3rd largest with a collection of over 250,000 volumes. In it, the visitor can study books written by Adamantios Korais as well as books given to him as a gift by the French Emperor Napoleon. Also important are the two caves of Sykia of the Olympians and Agios Galaktos, with very important archaeological significance and decoration. Of course, we cannot omit the castle of the city of Chios, which is still inhabited and its streets enchant, but lead to excellent cafes and eateries, as well as to the Turkish Baths. The Municipal Art Gallery of Chios is located on Andreas Syngrou Street, in the center of the city. Specifically, it is just a few meters from the central square (Vounakeio Square). The Folklore Museum of the Kallimasia Gymnasium, and of course the brand new Mastic Museum, next to Pyrgi, which needs no introduction. Popular expressions for Chios, in antiquity the Chian life (Chian tables, Chian laughter) while today the popular expression 'ourgios' which means stupid and 'the Chians go two by two' because of their wit and cunning. It is worth taking the visitor leaving with him local products, mainly from mastic, wine, Souma (Raki from fig distillation), but also many spoon sweets mainly from citrus fruits of the plain. The Village. Pyrgi is one of the largest and most impressive villages of Chios, and is located in the south of the island. It has about 1,500 permanent residents, who stand out for their adherence to traditional customs and traditions, as well as for their local dialect. On local holidays, weekends and during the tourist seasons, the number of people in the village multiplies. Time in this village flows calmly and seems to have stopped in an old era. And indeed, it retains many of its original elements, since it has been declared a listed monument. It is known for the richness and importance of its folklore, archaeological and linguistic point of view. Because it was little affected by the great earthquake of Chios in 1881, it retains its medieval appearance. Its urban structure and architectural form are of enormous historical interest. Its fortification is representative of countering enemy raids. The feeling that the village was built to provide protection to its inhabitants is pervasive, as the visitor walks in its picturesque narrow streets. The defensive tower in the center of the village, which served as a shelter in case of attack, as well as the dead-end streets and the united roofs in the tall two-storey and three-storey houses, connected to the opposite with arches (doxarades or arches), enhance this feeling of the visitor. But that extra remarkable feature of the Village that fascinates the visitor at first glance is the Pyrgousika houses with the "scrapers", a type of decoration of the facade with geometric shapes of linear engraved designs in black and white. This impressive technique, where the carvings are done by hand, includes black sand (plaster) that is whitened with the so-called "tribidi" and then scraped with a fork. This is how these famous patterns are created. At the festivals, in addition to the layout of the orchestra and the tables, which sits in the center of the large square and around which the people dance, the local dance, Pyrgousikos, is also peculiar. It is fast and impetuous and consists of quick small steps. It is danced by three dancers, two men and a woman in the middle. The village has many temples, perhaps more than any other village on the island, of which the church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary built in 1694 stands out, which is celebrated at the great festival on August 15. Also noteworthy are the church of Taxiarchis dating back to 1680 and the monastery of Agios Georgios of the 19th century, all in very good condition. But it is worth standing in the church of the Holy Apostles, a copy of the katholikon of the New Monastery and the Church of Saint Irene in Constantinople is a well-preserved Byzantine monument, with plenty of ceramic decoration, serrated bands on the dome, with double marble columns and colorful bottle mouths in the masonry. Its interiors have frescoes by Antonios Domestichos of Crete. They date back to 1665, with a very strong folk element but also features from the style of the Cretan School. The village has many fertile plains and produces mainly mastic, since it is the pre-eminent mastic-producing village with the largest production and the most mastic producers. It also produces olive oil of excellent quality, almonds, legumes and vegetables, enough for self-consumption. In the village you will find the new mastic museum that you must definitely visit, cafes and taverns, one of the best night clubs on the island, a supermarket, a bank with an ATM, and a gas station, shops with souvenirs and local products, free wifi in the square and in the cafes in it, as well as residents available to answer any questions you may have.
