Casa South Fork is situated seven miles north of Study Butte off of Highway 118 in a secluded homestead area. The charming 1,500 square-foot home was built atop a mesa with astounding panoramic views of the Big Bend National Park and beyond. Casa South Fork is a comfortable, spacious, and beautiful 3 bedrooms/2 bath home that is well maintained on 38 acres. Casa South Fork offers some of the best scenery and most diverse plant and wildlife that the Chihuahuan Desert has to offer. Casa South Fork offers, in addition to the 3 bedrooms, a fully kitted out kitchen with a microwave, waffle maker, rice cooker, toaster, dishwasher, and traditional kitchen appliances. There are two outdoor grills as well. One uses charcoal, and the other uses propane. The dining table seats 6 guests. We like to share food/kitchen items with our guests, and we allow them to leave items for future guests. Our motto is "take one, use one; have one, leave one." Available items often include (but not always) cooking oil, spices, popcorn, kool-aid, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and such. In the event you need some items, the store is just up the road (seven miles or so, approximately ten minutes)! P.S.......There is definitely a coffee maker and a keurig as well. PLEASE NOTE: OUR WATER SOURCE CONSISTS OF WELL WATER THAT WE DON’T RECOMMEND DRINKING DUE TO A HIGH VOLUME OF MINERALS. Therefore, we have a water filtration system located at the sink in the kitchen. There is a small faucet with a black lever for drinking water. Please note that the third bedroom is under the same roof. However, a person would walk out the back door onto the covered patio area to enter the third room. (There is a picture of the backyard with the covered patio.) One of the two doors on the patio is the entrance to the third room. It is private with a door that locks. If you feel this is not suitable for your young children, we can offer a comfortable twin roll away bed or two beds with all the linens so that it can be placed in the king and/or queen bedroom(s) in exchange for the third room. You will have the luxury of enjoying THE WHOLE HOUSE all to yourself! As well, there is a charming covered patio area with a picnic table (seats 6) on the back porch. Also, 20 yards or so from the back door, there is a deck that overlooks a serene valley. This is a fantastic location for morning coffee, evening libations, star-gazing, bird watching, wildlife photos, breathtaking sunrises and sunsets, and more. We are only a phone call away or one mile from Casa South Fork in the event you need assistance or travel advice in any way. The neighborhood that Casa South Fork is located in is a secluded, mostly private area. Casa South Fork's remoteness allows one to see, smell, and hear those things that are rarely thought of. The view atop the hill allows one to see 360 degrees and offers abundant, spacious freedom. The landscape begs to be explored. Arroyos dissect the desert flats and mesas with large petrified rocks embedded. Our strict "NO HUNTING” policy is enforced to protect the wildlife. We also ask that you refrain from discharging any firearms (including pellet and bb guns) on the premises. In order to protect the environment, we have restrictions against digging up plants and/or carrying off rocks. A burn ban is in effect in Brewster County. NO OPEN FIRES ARE ALLOWED! The Big Bend Park, Terlingua (Ghost Town), or Lajitas has all the adventure, history, and entertainment that the Big Bend has to offer. There are many leisure activities offered such as river rafting, jeep tours, all terrain vehicle tours, sightseeing, walking, festival events, hiking, horseback riding, scenic drives and wildlife viewing. Attractions include the old cemetery in the Ghost Town, several historical markers, a museum, restaurants, ruins, live theater, and many more. There is also a wide array of Curio Shops that allow one to pick up a souvenir or two. For those with a big appetite, there are a variety of restaurants to choose from or several stores to buy groceries. Local services and businesses consist of an atm/bank, post office, lumber yard, medical services, massage therapists, body shops, curio shops, convenience stores, a laundry mat, and grocery stores. Sports consist of cycling, golfing, hiking, kayaking, mountain biking, mountain climbing, rafting, swimming, equestrian events, and more. Casa South Fork is located 10 minutes from Study Butte, so private transportation is needed. The house, however, is quite easy to find, and the roads are maintained to a degree but are rutted in certain places. Four-wheel drive is not necessary most of the time. On occasion, when the monsoon season comes around, the dirt roads can get slick. This usually happens during the summer months between late June through mid-August. If it happens to rain and you have booked with us, we will make sure that you get to and from our place. We will notify you in advance if rain is in the forecast. If an unexpected rain occurs, we have a four-wheel drive vehicle that we keep in our barn in case it is needed. However, it would be most appropriate to have an SUV, Jeep, or Truck to drive the Terlingua dirt roads. A car is doable if it doesn’t sit too low to the ground and you drive very slow. Sports cars are not recommended at all as the roads will damage the underneath side of the car. The speed limit on Ocotillo Mesa Road is 25 mph. The sign is clearly marked as you turn off the highway onto the dirt road. Please be observant and obey the speed limit. The dirt road is very narrow and is dangerous to speed and pass another car on. There is ample parking in front of the house and to the side of the house. Breakfast/Maid Service is NOT provided during the stay. We do not offer laundry privileges on site. However, two laundry facilities are located 10 minutes away in Study Butte. Minimum age requirement for booking is 21 years of age or older. We personally host and sanitize our own vacation rental. We follow Airbnb’s five steps for an enhanced cleaning process via CDC guidelines for sanitization. We sanitize with all kinds of cleaning products including Lysol and Clorox. If you are chemically sensitive or do not like the sanitizing products we use above, please let us know when you make the reservation. We make every effort to use products that kill 99.9% of germs. We offer hand sanitizer and wipes for our guests to use and keep. We also furnish a cleaning caddy for our guests’ convenience. We do not allow tent camping, RV’s, or Motor Homes. We are not set up for these types of accommodations. Air Mattresses and/or sleeping on the couch or floor is prohibited. This is for your own safety. We want our guests to sleep well and be comfortable. Cell phone service is spotty and generally works best outside. On occasion, it will work from the living room. Verizon (roaming), T-Mobile (5G domeatic), and AT&T (5G domestic) are the main companies that provide cell service. Available cell service is limited, so please understand that this is beyond our control. If you do have an emergency, we do offer a landline at Casa South Fork for calling 911 or calling locally to surrounding areas which include: Alpine, Terlingua Ranch Headquarters, Study Butte, Big Bend, Terlingua and Lajitas. Terlingua has an ambulance service. The address for Casa South Fork is: 2509 Dark Canyon Loop, which is located one mile down Ocotillo Mesa Road. It is between Gates 5 & 6. The address is indicated at the front entrance and is well-lit at night. It is listed on the refrigerator, in the top, right buffet drawer, and in our listing. Additional guests who come to visit are not allowed to stay for an extended period of time. A short visit is all that is allowed because of limited space and use of facilities. We also do not allow large gatherings such as parties, reunions, or get-togethers with family or friends as our place is not set up for this. There are local places to rent and we will gladly make suggestions to you at your request. Please inquire and secure a place in advance because of limited facilities that are available. Please refrain from rearranging furniture, furnishings, or fixtures of any kind. If you need an extra night light, lamp, etc… please ask, and we will make every effort to fulfill your wish. Please do not leave A/C’s, fans, heaters, electric blankets, or electrical appliances on if everyone leaves the vacation rental for any period of time. It is for everyone’s safety. We also ask that you do not overload circuits as this could cause a fire. Please be aware of the amount of power being used. Please be aware that rattlesnakes are present in the desert, especially during the summer months. The most common found in the area are the diamondback, green mohave, and rock rattler. They are deadly with the green mohave being the deadliest. We have never seen any poisonous snakes on or around Casa South Fork in the many years that we have owned it, but this doesn’t mean that they are not hiding in cool places. Please be observant when walking on or off the property. We will not be responsible for injuries that occur on the premises. This includes children playing on the swing set, touching or falling on cactus, throwing rocks at each other, stick fighting, hiking, getting stung by an insect, bitten by a reptile or critter, arachnid, or wild animal, etc… Anything you do on the grounds at Casa South Fork is at your own risk. At Casa South Fork, we are so delighted that you have come to disconnect from the everyday distractions of life. You will enjoy connecting with nature, family, and/or friends. We do offer satellite and wi-fi for your convenience. We offer a plethora of family entertainment items such as movies, books, games, a children’s playground, and beautiful 360-degree scenic views. You are staying in the prime area of the Terlingua Ranch. Once you arrive, you’ll see why.
