The Ewiges Meer Nature Reserve Eternal Sea The largest Hochmoorsee in Germany, the Eternal Sea with the nature reserve of the same name, is one of the most impressive sights of Holtrie. In the middle of a 400-hectare high moor landscape, the visitor will find a unique natural landscape here, one of the rare landscapes that have been preserved for the human being in its original form. The Eternal Sea covers a water area of around 90 hectares and is framed by the „ Little Eversmeer“ andthe „ Dobbe“, two other moors. A nature lover once described the constantly changing mood images in the Ewiges Meer nature reserve as follows: „Beautiful is the Eternal Sea in Junimond when the wool grass lights up from its shores and a gentle summer wind moves the wool balls slightly. Cycling trails on almost all main roads as well as the Holtriem hiking trail, a circular hiking trail off the main roads, invite you to cycle. The approximately 48 km long Holtriem hiking trail leads through the scenic landscapes of Holtrie and connects existing commercial trails to an attractive circular hiking trail. The idea for the creation of this hiking trail was born in 1987. Year after year, sections of the hiking trail were realized until 1991 the last gap between Nenndorf and Westerholt took place with the creation of the ‚ Lang Pads‘. The Holtriem hiking trail is well signposted and is gradually completed with shelters and information boards. Guests and locals like to take the hiking trail, especially since the hiking trail can be left in any village. This also allows families with children to explore the hiking trail in partial routes according to the performance capacity.
