Stamford itself is a treat — England's very first designated Conservation Area, with some 600 listed buildings spanning medieval to Georgian, and streets of honey-coloured stone that film-makers keep returning to for period dramas such as Pride and Prejudice and Middlemarch. Browse the boutique shops and cafés, book one of its excellent restaurants, or head just outside town to Burghley House and its deer park.
