Other things to note Aisne is an ideal destination for all travelers looking for a stay in France away from big cities and crowds. If you're looking for ideas for a trip to the countryside, the Aisne will definitely be a great destination. Families will also easily find their account. Golf de l 'Ailette: From the Hotel restaurant du Golf de l 'Ailette, you can contemplate the lake and take the greenway that leads straight to the beautiful Vauclair Abbey. If you have the option, go there by bike. The walk is superb and the 10 kilometers that separate the lake from the abbey are completely flat and furnished. Fields, lake, forest… The landscapes crossed are particularly pleasant and lend themselves to beautiful walks. If you don't want to get there by bike, road access is also possible with parking close to the site. Once there, you will discover the ruins of an old Cistercian abbey in an absolutely charming bucolic and green setting. This is probably one of the best bike rides that can be done in the Aisne, and accessible to all. Axo Plage: All Axonais know! It is the leisure base of the Aisne department located in Monampteuil, between Laon and Soissons. It's a great place to spend a day with family or friends. Located in the ailette valley, on the edge of Lake Monampteuil, Axo 'Plage offers a range of leisure activities, accessible to as many people as possible. The 40 ha site is composed of wooden playgrounds for the small, sports fields (pétanque, beach volleyball, basketball, tennis...) picnic areas, a beach 300 meters long, an aqua park, water slides, a Ninja course and a fitness park. Laon: Visit the surprising city of Laon, from its miles of underground to the top of its cathedral. Amidst the agricultural plains of the Aisne, stands the hill on which the city of Laon was built. With the high towers of its cathedral, it is difficult to miss it as it slices in the reliefless landscape of the surroundings. After climbing by a lace road from the lower town, the arrival in the historic part of Laon is superb. An ancient city high up awaits. Take the time to stroll through the maze of streets and alleys that make up the historic center of Laon. Don't miss the different views offered over the surrounding countryside. And open your eyes, if the weather is in the game, you can even see the towers of the Basilica of Saint-Quentin more than 40 kilometers from here! If you love history and unusual discoveries, take a guided tour to discover the Aisne Prefecture. For example, you will have the opportunity to discover the underground that crosses the city from side to side or the possibility to climb to the top of the cathedral and enjoy an unusual view of the city's roofs. Chemin des Dames: It is a French departmental road in the department between Laon, Soissons and Reims, France. The Chemin des Dames entered the collective memory of having been the scene of several deadly battles of the First World War. Craonne and the California Plateau: A true natural fortress at the heart of the German defensive device during the Great War, the California Plateau remained a goal strategic until 1918: the plateau was crossed by tunnels leading to fortified caverns (such as the Cave of the Dragon or the Winterberg Tunnel). But while Verdun was quickly erected as a national symbol of victory, the California Plateau and the Chemin des Dames were long associated with the crushing failure of the April 1917 Nivelle offensive and the Craonne mutinies that followed. The name Craonne, located at the heart of the Battle of the Chemin des Dames, was popularized by La Chanson de Craonne who remains associated with the 1917 mutineers of the First World War. The Dragon Cave: It is located on the Chemin des Dames, in the territory of the municipality of Oulches-la-Vallée-Foulon. There is a strategic location during the First World War and more specifically during the Nivelle offensive, during the Battle of Observatories. It was the Germans who, during their occupation of the cave, nicknamed it the Dragon Cave (Drachenhöhle in German). The flames and sparks of the machine guns, coming out of the entrances to the cave during the fights, reminded them of the flames spewed by dragons from their caves. Chateau de coucy: Château de Coucy is a former castle and stately residence, built from the 13th century, now in ruins and whose remains stand in the French commune of Coucy-le-Château-Auffrique. The castle was the seat of Coucy's powerful house until Enguerrand VII died of Coucy in 1397. Le château et djon de septmonts: Located a few kilometers from Soissons, in the Aisne, the village of Septmonts largely owes its notoriety to its 14th century dungeon century, impressive remnant of an old castle, residence of the bishops of Soissons. Around the dungeon, the Saint-Louis room, the "square tower", both from the 13th century, the 16th century Renaissance pavilion and the 15th century church with its beautiful beam of glory, is a remarkable set to discover, with in the background a vast wooded area arranged in arboretum. Vineyard: Don't forget the proximity to the vineyards located in the Marne, where you will have the pleasure of visiting and tasting the local champagne!
