Off-Grid 1912 Hay Barn on a Wild Estonian River
Off-Grid 1912 Hay Barn on a Wild Estonian River
Description
A carefully restored 1912 hay barn standing between wildflower meadows and a forest river — just 5 meters from the water. Floor-to-ceiling windows on all four sides, the only light is candlelight. The Baltic Sea with beach is just 2 km away. This is not a typical countryside cottage. It’s a place for people who are looking for authenticity, silence, and room — for themselves, or for a small group. This is a genuine off-grid, digital-detox experience in one of Estonia’s quietest corners. The space This is not a typical countryside cottage. It’s a place for people who are looking for authenticity, silence, and room — for themselves, or for a small group. The barn has been fully restored using reclaimed materials, with the original log walls and roof structure left exposed. Windows on all four sides turn the room into something like an observation post over the landscape — sunrise from one side, sunset from another. The ground floor (24 m²) is an open communal space: woven floor cushions arranged for group sitting, a round table for shared meals or creative work, and bean bags in a reading corner. A wooden ladder-staircase leads up to the loft (2 × 10 m²), with sleeping space for up to six. The barn comfortably sleeps up to 6 people in total. The barn sits at the edge of hayfields, forest and river — wildlife sightings here are common, not rare. The Baltic Sea, with a long stretch of coastline, is just 2 km away. Important to know before booking: - No electricity in the barn) - No running water — the river is right outside for bathing/swimming - Outdoor dry toilet - Guests bring their own sleeping gear (mat/sleeping bag) or asking per request with extra small fee per person. This is not a shortcoming — it’s the whole point. This is a genuine off-grid, digital-detox experience in one of Estonia’s quietest corners. Guest access Guests have full access to the entire barn — both loft sections and the ground floor — along with the surrounding riverside grounds for swimming, sitting by the water, or simply relaxing outdoors. The property is yours to enjoy for the length of your stay. Other things to note No meals are provided on-site, and there is no kitchen for cooking, in keeping with the barn's off-grid character. However, cups, plates, and basic dishware are provided, so guests can bring their own food and drink and set up simply, a cooler bag works well, and a camping stove is a good option for those who want something warm (open fires only in designated safe spots, happy to point these out on arrival). For guests who would rather not self-cater, there's a boutique restaurant nearby, and the villages of Käsmu, Võsu, and Vihula offer a handful of cafés and places to eat within a short drive. The host can also point you toward the nearest shop for supplies when you arrive.
