Other things to note FEBRUARY / MARCH Carnival of Acireale: the most beautiful carnival in Sicily and one of the best in Italy. The baroque historical center of Acireale is the setting of this beautiful festival. Parades of finely-crafted and decorated allegorical floats made of papier-mâché are organized and acclaimed by huge crowds. Spectacular movements, thousands of lights, mutant backgrounds: the perfection that float artisans reach is absolutely stunning and requires a year-round work, as well as enough irony to meet the goal of mocking the most famous politicians and members of the star-system of the year. Other beautiful floats are decorated with cascades of flowers creating portraits and embellished by wonderful lighting systems – which is why night parades are the most attended and sought-after. The folk bands come from all over Italy to take part in the celebrations that usually last three weeks in February. Comic and entertaining bands, majorettes, folk shows, masks, music and dance performances, contests for kids and rituals: a light-hearted, thought-free atmosphere that recalls the most traditional rituals of the ancient popular feast that represented the only way for the poor people to forget their troubles and make fun of the most powerful authorities of the city. And as it happened centuries ago, the colorful Carnival of Acireale ends with the burning at stake of “Re Carnevale” (King Carnival); this cathartic moment is followed by jaw-dropping fireworks. A shorter, yet interesting, version of this staggering and lively celebration of priceless artistic value is repeated during summer (in August). OCTOBER Zafferanese October Festival An interesting event is the Ottobrata Zafferanese that takes place every Sunday of October in the historic center of the small town of Zafferana (about 9 km. from the holiday home). The protagonists of each Sunday are the typical products of the earth and their derivatives: grapes, wine, mustard, honey, apples and seasonal fruit, walnuts, hazelnuts, chestnuts, pistachios, mushrooms from Etna etc. ... A large space is devoted to crafts. Also worth noting: JANUARY Feast of San Mauro Abate Viagrande - Feast of the patron saint San Mauro Abate in Viagrande. Spectacular exit of the Patron Saint with a grand choreography of fireworks. In addition: FEBRUARY From 3 to 5 February in Catania, the feast of St. Agatha, patron saint of Catania, is celebrated, one of the most beautiful patronal festivals in the world, three days of worship, devotion, folklore, traditions. This festival attracts up to a million people every year. The first day is reserved for the offering of candles. An evocative popular custom has it that the candles donated are as tall or heavy as the person asking for protection. This first day of the feast ends in the evening with a magnificent fireworks display in Piazza Duomo. The next day, a procession takes place through the city streets. Four or five thousand people pull the heavy structure. Everyone strictly wears the "votive sack". The chariot is followed by eleven "Cannalori", tall wooden columns representing the city's guilds of arts and crafts. During the festivities, there is the traditional Fiera di Sant'Agata.
