Other things to note La Fère, a charming town in Aisne in the heart of Hauts-de-France, captivates with its rich historical heritage and its peaceful and authentic atmosphere. A former fortified town, it was a prestigious possession of the powerful lords of Coucy from the Middle Ages. These barons were rivals of the kings of France and famous for their motto "I am the lord of Coucy". La Fère was the site of the legendary chivalric tournament of 1187, one of the most lavish of its time. Its military past has a profound impact on its identity: as early as 1666, the Duke of Mazarin created a major arsenal there. In 1720, Louis XV established the kingdom's first artillery school there, which trained generations of officers and made La Fère the "city of the Artilleryman". Napoleon Bonaparte was even attached to it in 1786. The city remained an active garrison until 1993, including the 41st Marine Artillery Regiment. The famous statue of the Gunner (formerly on the Pont de l'Alma in Paris) still bears witness to this today. Just a few minutes away, the majestic site of Coucy-le-Château (one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe) completes this journey back in time. Not far away, the forest of Saint-Gobain, a vast green expanse of nearly 9,000 hectares, evokes another great page of history: it was here that the Manufacture Royale des Glaces de Saint-Gobain, the cradle of the global glass giant, was founded in the 17th century under Louis XIV. The woods then provided the essential fuel for the production of the famous mirrors of Versailles. Today, these forests offer magnificent walks, a haven of nature and freshness. Ideally located between Saint-Quentin, Laon (with its UNESCO cathedral) and the hilly landscapes of Picardy, La Fère is the perfect base for a stay combining history, culture and relaxation in the heart of nature.
