Originally built in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the home was carefully disassembled, with each piece marked in Roman numerals, transported across the Canada–United States border, and reassembled on this site in Shelburne in 1855. The property remained in the Bruce family for more than 125 years. One of its most notable residents was Mary Bruce, a local dressmaker who became well known for hosting backyard tea parties and community theatre productions.
