Mingei-Inspired Farmhouse. Entire House Rent.
Description
Stay in the story of a Japanese farmhouse. DEN Mashiko is a century-old farmhouse, set in the satoyama countryside of Mashiko. The traces of rural life can still be felt in its timber structure, earthen spaces, garden, surrounding fields, and changing seasons. Here, the spirit of mingei—the beauty of everyday handmade objects—meets the quiet landscape of rural Japan. Slow down, spend time together, and experience the house not as a museum, but as a living farmhouse with a story. Guest access Guests may use the main farmhouse areas designated for accommodation, the garden, and the terrace created on the former site of a stone storehouse. The property also contains several old agricultural buildings, including a traditional gatehouse, barns, storage sheds, and former farm outbuildings. These structures are part of the history and character of the property, but they are aged and have not been restored for guest use. For your safety, please do not enter any building or area outside the designated accommodation spaces and terrace. Do not cross ropes, signs, closed doors, or other boundaries. Please also take care when walking around the garden and grounds, as some surfaces may be uneven. Other things to note Guests who are not Japanese nationals are required to provide their passport information. DEN Mashiko is a century-old farmhouse and is different from a newly built hotel or modern house. You may notice natural signs of age, including the texture of old timber, small gaps, uneven floors, traditional fittings, and changes in floor level. These features are part of the character and history of the house. As the property is surrounded by nature, insects and small wildlife may occasionally appear, depending on the season. You may also hear birds, frogs, insects, wind, and rain—the natural sounds of the satoyama countryside. The grounds and surrounding roads can be very dark at night. Please use outdoor lighting or a flashlight when walking outside after sunset. To protect the historic building and prevent fire, open flames are not permitted except in equipment specifically approved for guest use. Please do not use the irori hearths, heating equipment, or other fire-related facilities unless clear instructions and permission have been provided. This stay is best suited to guests who appreciate historic buildings, nature, and the distinctive atmosphere of rural Japan.
