The Waddle is a traditional Shetland croft house, refurbished to offer a homely and comfortable stay for guests. Situated in a peaceful, quiet, remote location just over a mile from the nearby village of Walls, tucked in under the hill overlooking a sea-loch, it's a perfect place to enjoy Shetlands wildlife, scenery, peace and freedom. The Waddle is situated on an active croft. We have approximately 250 sheep with lambing in the spring, silage baling in the summer and feeding in the winter. The space A traditional Shetland croft house* modernly furnished + equipped. *What is a croft house? It is a traditional dwelling built on a croft, often a modest but sturdy structure, reflecting the practical and resourceful nature of crofters. Ground floor: • A well equipped kitchen with electric oven, gas hob, washing machine, microwave, dishwasher, fridge-freezer, hand mixer, stick blender and clothes airer. • Dining room to sit 4 people comfortably. This room also has a reading nook under the stairs (with sofa bed) and radio. • A cosy living room with leather corner suite and TV with built in free-view and PlayStation for watching DVDs. We have a selection of Shetland + Scottish books, information leaflets and magazines. • A spacious bath/shower room with roomy power-shower. • Boot room for keeping jackets, waterproofs, wellies, bikes, etc. ♡ Please Note: There are several small steps between rooms on the ground floor. The only bathroom/toilet is on ground floor. First floor: • Double room with standard double bed, bedside cabinets, clothes rack, full length mirror and hairdryer. • Twin room with 2 standard single beds, bedside cabinets, clothes rack, full length mirror and hairdryer. ♡ Please note: The ceilings on the first floor are coombed. The stairs are fairly narrow and steep. Our prices include: - Heating (oil central heating) - Electricity - Linen (bedding and towels) - Free WiFi Guest access The whole house, garden and front yard are yours while you're here. There's a large private parking space outside, and a rotary airer in the front yard for drying clothes. Unfortunately doorways are not wide enough for wheelchairs. There is an outside step at the Waddle entrance. There are also several small steps between rooms on the ground floor, and the stairs up to the bedrooms are fairly steep. We can give you a key for the byre if you require extra storage space for bikes, kayaks, etc. Other things to note We ask guests to arrive anytime after 2pm, and depart before 10am, unless otherwise agreed. We provide the following free of charge: teabags, instant coffee, sugar, ice cubes, salt + pepper, toilet roll, kitchen roll, tissues, cotton buds, cotton wool balls, washing up liquid, laundry capsules, dishwasher tablets, tinfoil, clingfilm, refuse sacks, hand soap. We can provide a travel cot, highchair, booster seat, changing mat, baby bath and potty if required. This should be arranged at the time of booking. There are postcards and lino-prints for sale in the wooden storage box in the dining room. There is a fire-pit in the garden for guests to use. Wood, matches and firelighters are available. Mobile phone signal is variable in the area - the best place to get a signal in the Waddle is on the front porch windowsill. In spring there is an abundance of rhubarb in the front garden. Please help yourselves. In the summer months we cut the grass regularly. We try to do this on changeover days but when this is not possible we will have to do it while guests are in the property. We will try our best to do the job quickly and without too much disturbance. The Waddle is situated on an active croft. It can be busy at times with lambing in the spring, silage cutting and baling in the summer and feeding in the autumn and winter months. There is always essential croft work and maintenance to be carried out, and crofting machinery will be used... tractors, quad bikes, trailers and diggers.
