Château La Rametière
Description
A 19th-century Norman château with a connection to the Dior family, a wartime escape from German firebombs, and a visit from General de Gaulle. Just 25 minutes from Mont Saint-Michel, Château La Rametière offers five individually named suites with antiques, crystal chandeliers, and private bathrooms. Guests are welcomed with a glass of pommeau in the Grand Salon. Park-like gardens bloom every month of the year. Norman breakfast included. Rated 4.9 — 98% of guests recommend us. The space On the second floor, the Pavie Suite is named for the family who purchased the château in 1900 — Parisian industrialists who made La Rametière their beloved second home, bringing with them the refined taste of the capital. Something of that Parisian sensibility lingers in every corner of this intimate suite, from the deep olive-green grasscloth walls to the gilded rococo mirror above a magnificent marquetry commode, its surface dressed with antique silver — a brush, a hand mirror, a pair of opera glasses — as if their owner had just stepped out. A painted French queen bed, a settee, a gold velvet wingback chair, and Persian rugs layered on warm oak floors complete a room that rewards unhurried attention. The ensuite bathroom is a genuine surprise for a junior suite — spacious and beautifully finished beneath the sloping roofline: double vessel sinks on a black granite counter, a large jet bathtub set into dark granite beside a lace-curtained dormer window with garden views, a generous walk-in shower with natural stone walls, an antique barley-twist dressing table with oval mirror, and a separate WC. During your stay Château La Rametière is owned by the Richardson and Davenport families — American farmers and food producers with a deep love for this corner of Normandy and a genuine commitment to preserving its history. The story began on a hiking trail in Peru in 2018, when Blair Richardson and Jason Davenport first floated the idea of owning a château in Europe. Two years later, during the pandemic, they found La Rametière online — historic, agricultural, already welcoming guests — and bought it without ever setting foot inside. It was an act of faith. It turned out to be the right one. Marti Richardson leads the property’s vision and guest experience, visiting Normandy five times a year to oversee operations, welcome guests personally, and tend to the gardens she has worked to restore. She has been studying French for five years. Day-to-day, the château is in the warm and capable hands of Pascale Breton, our full-time hostess and guest relations manager. Pascale is the heart of La Rametière — the person who greets you at the door, serves your breakfast, shares the story of the château, and makes sure your stay feels personal and well cared for. Together, they make La Rametière what it is.
