Farthings - genuine Austen charm cottage & garden

Renovated in June 2019, the house is a real haven, ideally located in the heart of Chawton village and surrounding Hampshire. Farthings was built circa 1700 for the workers of the Squires big house, which is now the Jane Austen Library in the centre of Chawton. The writer's home, now a museum, is directly opposite the house and it's said that Austen family members stayed in Farthings when they ran out of room. They certainly smoked hams for Squire Knight's guests in the inglenook fireplace. The space As our guest, you will have exclusive use of the house which enjoys two double bedrooms with an upstairs bathroom, the lounge with open fire and a brand-new kitchen with modern appliances. As to be expected with a cottage of this age, there are beams but there is only one, in the kitchen, which is low if you are over 6ft/2 meters. For accessibility, there is a small flight of stairs (8 steps) and a split landing with two steps on either side; however the second bedroom is on the same level as the bathroom. There is a sturdy handrail and I've been told by my guests of a certain age (80+) that it was not too difficult for access. Please note that there is not a door on the main bedroom due to the space on the landing; this is replaced by a heavy curtain which provides ample privacy. The garden (to the left as you come out of the house at the back) is a secret gem, offering plenty of space and seating area to relax and peak over the wall to the field of horses and nearby South Downs National Park. A BBQ and additional seating is made available for renters and can be found in the garden shed. Guest access You will have exclusive use of the full house and its garden.
