Founded in the 10th century, the Rila Monastery is regarded as one of Bulgaria's most important cultural, historical and architectural monuments. We recommend seeing one of the oldest Monasteries on the Balkans - on a good day takes only half an hour by car. The Seven Rila Lakes The Seven Rila Lakes are a group of lakes of glacial origin (glacial lakes), situated in the Northwestern Rila Mountains in Bulgaria. They are the most visited group of lakes in Bulgaria. The lakes are situated between 2,100 and 2,500 metres elevation above sea level. Each lake carries a name associated with its most characteristic feature. St.John of Rila (The Cave and The Oltar ) St.John of Rila - was the first Bulgarian hermit. He was revered as a saint while he was still alive. The legend surrounding him tells of wild animals that freely came up to him and birds that landed in his hands. His followers founded many churches in his honour, including the famous Rila Monastery. Day excursions are optional - if requesting one, please note, that the excursion is weather dependent.
