Meyrueis is located near the departments of Gard and Aveyron. With its 60,000 inhabitants, Lozère is the least populated department in France. Between Causses and Cévennes, the commune of Meyrueis, 800 inhabitants, stretches from the limestone plateau of causse Méjean in the north, to the granite summit of Mont-Aigoual in the south. Built at the confluence of three rivers (Jonte, Brèze and Béthuzon), at the entrance to the Jonte gorges, the village of Meyrueis is located 25 km from the Tarn gorges. The altitude varies from 675 m in the valley to 1567 m at the top of Mont Aigoual. By its geological and geographical diversity, this territory offers multiple and changing landscapes, depending on the nature of the soil. An exceptionally rich flora finds privileged habitats in these areas, some of which are protected under the European classification systems by Natura 2000 zoning. Fauna is also omnipresent, with a wide variety of animal species ranging from animals in large forests (deer, doe, wild boar ...), passing by large raptors (vulture, eagle), without forgetting the wild horses of Przewalski . The subsoil, worked by natural elements, in limestone sectors, is at the origin of the great era of speleology with Édouard-Alfred Martel, considered as the founder of modern speleology. The region is the heart of an exceptional environmental group: South gate of the Grand Site of the Gorges du Tarn and de la Jonte, Cévennes National Park, the only National Park inhabited in mainland France. Since 2011 the Causses and the Cévennes have been inscribed on the World Heritage list of UNESCO, as “cultural landscape of Mediterranean agro-pastoralism”. This privileged environment is therefore extremely attractive, and in itself constitutes an exceptional natural area conducive to a large number of activities which are today very popular.
